i have a "regular" box you could say with my 12" sub. the 4th gen trunk is fairly small. my plans are to get a rear strut bar...and thinking about getting a smaller and slanted box to put my sub in so i dont lose more space in my trunk. my question is..will the bass effect created by the trunk be affected at all by the conversion from the "regular" box to a small and slanted box?
depends on how big or small of a box that the sub requires
sometimes you can put underbody paint insde the box and polyfill and that can fool it into thinking it has a larger box

when you make a box smaller, the sub/box combination will produce a higher resonant frequency (i.e. your sub won't play as low as loud/easily). Like apocalypse said, polyfill will help to trick the subwoofer that it's in a larger box.
It all depends on the specific subwoofer. If you look at your spec sheet for the sub, the manufacturer lists the optimal air space for the sub and also the recomended range you can use. If your new enclosure is on the small side, you can add 1lb of poly fill per 1 cubic foot of airspace the box has. You can also apply the damping material of your choice to the interior walls of the enclosure. (ie. dynamat, fatmat, eDead, etc)

The amount of airspace matters, but I'm not sure the shape of the airspace does. You could get a custom box built (like I did to match the slope of the back seats). Elemental Designs built me a custom box for their sub for $55. edesignaudio.com
