you had to buy a trunk popper to get it to work w/ your viper alarm? that's the only way you could pop the trunk remotely?

Yes because the stock release is just cable-driven. The accord trunk popper has a built in solenoid that is powered to release the trunk when hooked up to a channel on your alarm.
