I have a knock sensor problem, have failed to install it myself due to the tiny space available...and now need a shop to install it for me.
Where do you look first to find a shop that will install a part you give them? I'm not interested in paying another $200 to Firestone to buy their overpriced part and install it for me.
I've been through the phone book, too many choices, wondering where to start
Thanks!
Drew

I'd do it for you if you weren't so far. lol. But the best thing is to actually call around. A phone call only costs you 30 seconds. I dunno about 5th gens, but changing my knock sensor was pretty easy. You just gotta use both hands and attack it from different angles at the same time.

Any Honda dealer should have no problem doing it, even if you didn't buy the parts from them. The knock sensor replacement is not something I would entrust to any old "shop" anyway.

What tools did you use? All my drivers are too big to get at that sensor, and a long socket does not leave me enough room to get the rachet in there...
If I knew what kind of socket, tool, etc to use (flex extension maybe?) I might have a better shot at it

I'll call around to dealers here and see whats up...but dealers here can be very picky

If MZM can't do it, try Hondacura on 183. They install aftermarket parts and they know how to work on Honda and Acuras obviously. Ben White Automotive has a pretty good reputation, but they wanted $85 to do a compression test. I just bought a tester and did it myself.

This is all I used...
The socket was just a 27mm that I bought from Pep Boys. With an adapter for the 3/8 ratchet. I just jacked up the car on jack stands. Layed under the car & reached up to the sensor, disconnected the connector to it. Then you just have to put the socket on the sensor. After that, it's just attacking it from different angles to get the ratchet up there and snapped into the socket. The rest is cake after that. Installing the new one, is just the reverse process.

The 5G uses a 24mm socket...and there is loads of stuff in the way: steering/half-shaft/ and some big bundle of black wires attached to the bottom of the block.
I think i'll take your idea, and use a smaller rachet with an adapter and see if I have room. I actually broke that sensor, so I have MORE room to work with now lol...but with the short 24mm socket my rachet is too close to the block to work in...and with the long 24mm socket my rachet bumps up against those bundeled cables
Ideas? Thanks SO much for the help everybody

Well the 5G is a 24mm socket, and some bundle of wires in a black plastic housing...along with the steering assembly, oil filter, and half shaft are all things I have no space to work in...
I may give it another try after work, but it's way tough to get to without some smaller/specialized tools in a 5G
Any suggestions?
Hmm... Well not ever having been under a 5th gen, I don't know what to suggest. Haha. I just assumed it was similar. Don't get me wrong, there's a bunch of crap in the way on the 4th gen. You just have to snake the ratchet around to finally get to the socket. Someone lemme borrow their 5th gen & I'll figure it out.

Do you think a flexible extension would flex enough to help me? I've never used it

I really have no idea where this sensor is, but what about a box wrench? I think Sears probably has a 24mm box wrench. Clearance obviously wouldn't be a problem since the wrench is only 1/2" wide, but would you have room to turn it? What about a racheting 24mm wrench?

I bought a Stubby from Craftsman...it's standard but still fits just fine...and is about 4" long...
However, since the sensor is recessed (below the IM on the back of the block) I would need a box wrench about 2" long to get to it...
I wonder if a flex extension would help at all...but wow I am tired of buying tools for this project
That box wrench looks great but is way too long, I need something more like a screwdriver with a 24mm socket on the end

Almost any shop will install customer supplied parts. Thats like telling someone you wont pierce them because they brought their own jewelry.
They will be disappointed, but will normally charge you roughly the same.
And i'm trying to do this myself. I just dont see it on my sh. From all the BASE pictures i've seen, it should be simple for you to get at. With the ATTS, i heard it gets in your way. I wonder if any SH luders can help me out.

I spent almost 5 hours last night trying my HARDEST to get that thing out of there...
Read some of my other posts around here about my fate...my tools are either too long or too short to fit in there...and I am tired of wasting money on it when I can pay a shop $50 to do it locally.
Finally found a place here, they want $50 for the install...steep for sure but after messing with it so long, i'll just return the tools and get my money back...
Even after all this, it's still cheaper to pay $95 for the part and $55 for the install instead of $220 that Firestone wanted.
