whats wrong with my 5th gen?

I was driving down the highway in 5th gear when the engine check light came on. After about 30 seconds it went off. When I got out of the highway I had to stop at a light. I put the car in neutral to slow down and came to a complete stop. Then when the light turned green I couldnt put the car into first gear. Then the car started making a loud clanking noise. We put kept it in neutral and pushed it to the side of the road. We turned it back on only to hear the clanking noise and it still wouldnt go into any gear. So we turned it off and it was able to go into gear. Eventually, since we couldnt get it in gear while started we just put it in 2nd while it was off and then started it and drove it home. Its too late to get any help from anywhere around here so hopefully I can get a little help here. We were guessing that it may be the clutch but we arent exactly sure.

Can you shift gears when the car is turned off ?

You can still pull the code, it'll be in memory . jump the connector and tell us what it is ..

Report back with the above:

the clanking part sounds like what my car sounded like when the main bearing in the tranny was shot.

I would say something like a tranny part, or clutch part.

sounds like what happened to my transmission a while back. The clutch shattered taking the gears with it. good luck.

Loose nut behind the wheel??

come on that is a little funny.

I hope things work out... my guess is clutch or tranny packed up and went south

Good luck
