what causes low compression?

what causes it and how can it visibly be diagnosed? I know there are compressions checks but i'm not sure how those systems work nor do I have one.

It's caused by leaking seals, such as valve guides, piston rings, head gaskets. Visibly diagnosed? Highly unlikely. But a compression check and leakdown test can show you if there are some leaks happening in the system.

A compression test checks if the static compression (over three or four compression strokes) is proper, and if it's not then you could have leaks around the valve guides.

A leakdown test is done with the piston stationary at TDC and checks if the piston rings and head gasket are sealing properly.
