Weird and shocking - MUST READ

So where do I begin?

Let me law down the scene for you: After a late night craving for Burger King, my girlfriend and I had just gotten back on the highway to head back home. Before leaving the house, I flipped on the rear defroster in able to see out the back window because the outside temperature was probably about 38-42 degress at least. So we are sitting at a light on the way back with the heater on and the defroster which had (although not possitive) automatically turned itself off when the window had warmed up, as it normally does. (approx. time = 25 minutes after leaving the house) All off a sudden, there is this very, very loud POP sound that came from the rear of the car. Instinctively, I glanced behind me to see what the noise was. The back window appeared to have ice, snow, or something of that sort all over it because I couldn't see out it. My first thought was that maybe someone behind me had thrown a very hard snowball on the back of my window. Since we were stopped at a light, I got out of my car in anger to see who threw it. There was no one behind me! The sound was loud enough that the lady in the car next to me with her windows up even heard the popping noise and yelled to me asking what the noise was.

After pulling over, I realized the window had completely shattered into a million little pieces. It was only being held up by the tinting.

So the problem? I can tell you for sure there was nothing that hit the window to cause this because the breakage is completely even throughout the entire window and there is no sign of a point of impact. The only thing I can think of, and I know it's a stretch, is that the glass simply couldn't handle warm temperature inside the car and the almost freezing temperature outside of the car. It's the only thing that makes a bit of sense to me but.... who knows. Any ideas?

My insurance doesn't cover this type of accident and now I have to find a rear window for cheap. If anyone can get a 4th gen back glass for under $150, please help me out!

Somebody hit the rear window on my old car, a camry, with a golf club, or similar.
the window was shattered into a million peices, and it held in place. The only part that was damaged was the part where the club actually went through the glass. It just looked like it was frosted. that's how saftey glass is designed to break in a serious impact.
it is entirely likely that your rear window was hit by a bb or pellet gun, and that shattered the window. if you have comprehensive coverage, your insurance should cover that.

Yeah, I doubt that. It's tempered safety glass, so it doesn't shatter from temperature differences. If that were the case, I'd have gone through about 900 rear windows by now.

damn .. thats unheard of ... It's -40 outside ... and my car maybe got to 10 degrees inside but I put on the defog and nothing ...

Have a good long hard look at it in the daylight today and see if you can find anything, if not .. make a mark so that insurance will cover it.

sucks to hear about it .. hope you can find/ replace the back window for cheap and soon.. g'luck.
