well, my main concern is if it'll be ok if i start messing w/ the VAFC before getting it tuned. will it harm anything if i do? I wont be able to find someone to tune it right for me for about a week. is there some sort of 'pre-set configurations' that could work for specific prelude builds? thanks for any help.

Pull out the kick panel from the passenger side. There is where your ECU and AT computer is. Remove the harness from the ECU, plug in your harness to the engine harness, then the ecu. Voila your VAFC is now wired to the computer.

Theres no pre set configurations for the prelude. Your best and safest option is to get it tuned.
+1 on that.
I am not a knowledgable person when it comes this stuff. My best recommendation is to get it tuned. And until you get it tuned just leave it as is. You can still have it connected, just don't change any of the settings.
Your local performance shop should be able to tune it. Best thing to do is ask around in your area.

You need this to be setup so all your fuel info is correct. running lean can kill your motor.
You may want to google from apexi tuners or hondata tuners. Hondata tuners may also be able to tune the VAFC for you aswell. Just call, discuss, then schedule an apointment. Also for a power tune you will need a shop with a dyno.
I am not sure exactly how far you are from Dallas, but if you can drive to Dallas, Todd (Marcucci) would be able to tune it for you. He tuned the VAFC on my car.

+1 Marcucci motorsports did my 5spd swap. Then will be doing my hondata and base tune
ok, well just installed the VAFC and will get it tuned tomorrow morning, but one thing.
ok, so i start the car up w/ the VAFC and everything seems to be fine (i guess).
i turn it off, and for some oddly reason i take out the connection for the VAFC and start the car again....the CEL comes on, but when i plug the VAFC back in, the CEL stays on.
so best chance is that the CEL came on due to me taking the connection apart? and the CEL will eventually go away ? thanks for any help
You need to sit down and read the entire manual before touching your car again. Read it 2 times, even 3. You don't just plug in the VAFC and start driving, after it's plugged in you must initialize it!
*throws you a flame suit*
i got this VAFC used and it didn't come with a manual....is there a place i can find one online or something? maybe i should post a WTB thread? hehe, thanks.
