UhOh.. oil on spark plug! HELP!!!

OK doing some routine checking on the car this am.., just taking the plugs out and ispecting them.... They have some carbon deposit and I can tell that the engine is runnig a little rich.. no biggie really...

BUT i got to the number 1 or is it 4 cylinder? the one CLOSEST to the distributor. Pull it out and there is some oil JUST on the threads of the spark plug.. I wiped it off re-installed it and then removed it again.. Once again some oil on the threads of the spark plug.

Ok some backround.. the car is an Oil guzzler.. It also has a smallish oil leak that seems to come and go... But I keep it full of oil and it runs fine..

SO what does the oil on the thread of the plug mean.. I am NOT talking about the white insulator part, but the actual threading. THe "electrode" part of the plugs looks just like the other plugs. no visible signs of oil there.. so what is it.. time for a rebuild or what? the car has 136k miles on it and it is NOT babied.. I mean I change the oil every 2.5k and keep it well maintained but I run the crap out of it on a regular basis..

PROGNOSIS??

thanks,
andres

It means you have a leaky donut. Seriously.

The valve cover gasket goes around the edge of the valve cover. Many people forget to change out the "donuts" around the spark plug holes at the same time, which leak down into the plug hole.

If they have never been replaced, replace them. If they have been replaced recently, you might consider checking to see that they are seated or using Hondabond in addition to the gasket material.

No sweat- as long as the electrode looks OK, your motor is fine.

You might want to do a compression test if you are consuming oil but not leaking it.

Those are pretty high compression numbers for an H22... are you running a JDM spec motor or different pistons?

With those numbers, you shouldn't be burning oil unless it's coming in through valve seals (you'd have to have a LOT of miles to do that on a Honda), your PCV system, or you're running a crappy oil with a low flash point. Keep in mind a quart per 3000 street miles with a lot of VTEC'ing is normal, between oil cooking on the cylinder walls and the PCV system.

Are you leaving puddles? How much are you burning? What exactly is an "Oil guzzler?"

Typically, how often (if no leaks)?

I wouLD say I add about 1 quart every 1000 miLEs right now... Nah nothing special done to the engine, Those numbers where achieved about 1 month ago or so. But there is a leak I was tolD it might be the seal that is notorious for going bad on our ludes... I think that most peopLE replAce it with an aftermarket brand SRP or something Like that.. ALL I know is that the part was cheap but lAbor was kiLLEr.. so this xmas I am getting a HELMS and I am gonna do all the seaLs myseLf..

Beats me my car runs really rich, I recentLY replAced the o2 sensor and hat seems to have heLped it out.. but now I am getting sLight hesitation at very low RPMS in 2nd and 3rd gear..

Well I am gonna do alL the major seals on the engine right after xmas and go from there.. it stilL pulLs super strong.. just gotta watch my oiL lEveL....

Oh and I have been using valvoline high endurance 5w-30.. it states on the case that it is specialLY formuLated for high miLAge engines.. I mean its not the best but its not Like I am running Pep Boys brand crap either....

OH and I wouLD say not puddLs but something about the size of two siLver dolLars of oil.. just beLow where my oiL pan is.. I had the oil pan seaL replAced.. but the lAbor killed me.. so I am gonna hold out tilL I get my helms and spend about 2 or 3 weekends just repLAcing anything that makes sense to replAce.. IE any and aLl seals engine mounts ETC..

Thanks!
