tranny whine in reverse

what causes my transmission to whine while in reverse? i've heard this on other cars too

Reverse gears are generally straight-cut, which are stronger, cheaper, and a lot noisier.

Racing transmissions usually have straight cut gears for strength, but they're noisy as a bastard.

almost every honda has that noise....i call it the toy car sound cuz it sounds like an rc car.

lol, thanks for the input. if straight cut gears are stronger and cheaper, why dont they use them for the other 5 gears? smoother shifts w/o them?

Just imagine what your reverse gear would sound like at 80. Probably get annoying after a minute or two.

yep...only "Cheaper" cars make that sound...meaning the prelude is a ....
