time for new brakes... slotted or cross-drilled

someone explain to me the difference performance and efficiency-wise.

and also.... what causes my brakes now to squeak and wobble.... are they warped? rusted? anything to stop the squeaking?

and what are the price for slotted or cross drilled rotors?

the price i'm looking at for neuspeed cross drilled or slotted both amount to $115. is that reasonable... does anyone know if thats per pair or per brake?

this is taken from a FAQ back then in the PVN days:

Quote:
Theoretically, the extreme heat build up between the brake pad and the rotor causes gases to be released from the brake pad. The pad is then riding on this thin layer of gas and is not able to fully contact the rotor. You push harder on the brakes but even more gases are released and so the braking effectiveness is decreased. This is known as pad fade. A cross-drilled or slotted rotor provides a channel for the gases to evacuate.

Be careful using drilled rotors since they may cause uneven brake pade wear and sometimes are prone to cracking (the drilling causes weakness in the rotor)

It should be mentioned by drilling the rotors, you will actually create less surface area to dissipate heat. Your mileage may vary with cross-drilled rotors.

Other shops slot their rotors. This involves creating a groove (slot) into the rotor. The idea behind this modification is to allow an edge on the rotor for the brake pad to bite into. By slotting the rotors, you can ensure even brake pad wear as well. Theoretically the slotting of rotors would increase surface area, so you might be able to expect a cooler rotor.

IMHO, I upgrading your rotors may not be a worthwhile effort. I would only do so if you have a severe brake fade problem. Most street enthusiast driving does not punish the brakes hard enough.

i've had powerstop x-drilled rotors on for more than a year already and it's been very good -- no problems whatsoever.

but next time around, i'm gonna go with Brembo blanks.

i just got my brembo x drilled rotors and they feel good. i did notice a better stopping distance and doesnt feel like u push as hard to stop. they are pretty good just make sure u break them in propperly
BTW
brembo only makes blanks for the prelude and when u buy the drilled or slotted that is done by the company that bought the blanks from brembo. not from brembo themselves.

Sorry, but rotors won't make a difference in stopping distances, that's a myth, unless your brake system really sucked to begin with.

If you race, stay away from cross drilled. Slotted or blank is the only way to go with race rotors. Just upgrade to better pads and fluid.

As for out gassing, most modern brake pads don't do that except when they are green (hence the need for a break in period).

Some of theirs use Brembo blanks, from what I've seen ALL of them are high quality.
