Hey guys,
I got my test pipe today and I had some trouble. When I took the stock studs off the stock cat I messed the threads up a little so I couldn't use one of the studs so the test pipe isn't connected all the way right now and not at its most secure state/tightest.
So since I'm missing one of the studs/bolts on the test pipe, I start the car up and I'm not sure how a test pipe is suppose to sound on a catback exhaust system so I can't tell if this is regular or not. But for sure, I hear most of the sound directly undeneath (where I didn't put the other stud/bolt and at the test pipe area). Is the loudening result of the testpipe suppose to come through the muffler or through the test pipe area?
I didn't expect it to be this loud from a simple test pipe, considering I have a stock catback exhaust thats why I'm kind of scared. So can anyone tell me if this sound will stay even if I put the other stud on to connect it all the way and tighten it at max to close all the exhaust gas leaks?
HELP ME please, I don't want my car to be this loud because that's what the exhaust cut out is suppose to do...
Get some stainless bolts, nuts, and lockwashers from a hardware store to mount the test pipe up. Why are you trying to use the studs off the stock cat???
I'm going to do the obigatory "Why are you running a test pipe?" Do you honestly think the extra 2-3 hp you will get from that over a high flow cat is worth the extra pollution yopur car will put out?
Honestly, I am getting a little sick of seeing people using these things as a replacement for their cats. There is a reason it is called a "TEST" pipe. It is intended for testing purposes only and not meant for replacement of a vital peice of emissions control equipment.
All that said, get the thing fully sealed up first and then see if it quiets down.
I have DC421->testpipe->greddy evo2 and its not that loud. (at least from cabin area)
Just where I want it to be. exhaust "humming" noise at 4~5k is just sweet.
Can you post a clip? Im curious how testpipe sounds with stock exhaust.
Why are you asking the same question that two people already answered? If you can't do the following, have someone install parts correctly for you.

So, since you obviously don't understand what those guys were telling you, we'll do a write up for you.
1. Using a jack, jack up the vehicle and support it using 4 jackstands.
2. Remove the test pipe.
3. Measure the diameter of the bolt holes in the test pipe and exhaust flanges. Write down the smallest diameter.
4. Measure the thickness of the exhaust flanges.
5. Measure the thickness of the test pipe flanges.
6. Add the thickness of the exhaust flange and test pipe flange together. Add about 1/2" to 3/4" to this number (will depend on the diameter of the hardware).
7. Go to the hardware store, buy 6 stainless steel bolts of said diameter in #3 and of said length in #6.
8. Buy 6 corresponding nuts and 12 corresponding washers.
9. Now, put the test pipe on the car with 2 gaskets.
10. Thread 6 bolts and washers into the flange bolt holes.
11. On the other side, install 6 washers and 6 nuts (the washers go on before the nuts).
12. Using two wrenches, tighten the bolts. Make sure you turn the bolt heads in a CW direction. Anti-seize is a good idea, but not 100% necessary.
13. Double check your work. Make sure you tightened all of the bolts/nuts. A good thing to remember is righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.
You're hearing an exhaust leak, which is to be expected since you don't have the test pipe installed correctly.

If gas cost is a major concern, why are you buying aftermarket parts for your car?

2 trips to the hardware store costs gas

Why did you need to take out the cat so bad?
Why not put in the ECS before the cat, or even after?
Why not get a high flow cat?
Catalytic converters, particularly high-flow units can perform like an empty pipe, and do an awesome job of protecting the environment from the worst emissions.
My understanding is that Blacktrax will not put the ECS before the cat because they don't want to have to hassle modifying the header to get the ECS to fit.
If you get pulled over here in the Bay Area and they find you don't have a cat, you are going to get a big fine.
The ECS after a high flow cat would be the way to go.
By the way, what have you done about the secondary O2 sensor???
Yes, the fine for no cat is in the thousands ($2000, IIRC), and it is not a fix-it ticket, though you are required to rectify the problem. You'll have to go to the smog referee as well.
Not too hard for them to tell either. They have mirrors for looking under the car, but most officers won't need that, as the exhaust will smell very different without a cat.
Why did you need to take out the cat so bad? test pipe for ecs
Why not put in the ECS before the cat, or even after? doesnt work out with ludes
Why not get a high flow cat? ecs cant be modded onto a hiflowcat
I'm gonna try my best to switch the cat back on as often as possible, and i do feel really guilty using a test pipe. just to let you all know, i tried REALLY REALLY hard to make it work so i can keep the cat on, but all ways were too complicated and ended up not working, im very very sorry guys.
and shark, im not sure if the ECS after hi flowcat will work, unless theres a hiflowcat that is about 5 inches long. BELIEVE me, i've tried so hard trying to make the ECS work with the cat on, even ask dvsracergirl.
sorry again
UPDATE: hopefully the rest of my stock exhaust will cancel out any smell or bad things that go into the air after the test pipe. And my exhaust is REALLY REALLY quiet still with the test pipe installation fixed.
UPDATE 2: Secondary o2 sensor is in the o2 bung, I will be expecting the CEL in about 50-100 miles

i started it the third time and i didnt get one yet
anyways, the smell isnt that bad, i think the reonators and the stock muffler is cancelling out alot of the bad gases still. Do aftermarket exhaust system have resonators/restrictive mufflers?
i dont know why but i feel guilty now, even though a test pipe with stock exhaust isnt even too bad. the difference in sounding is very minimal also, sounds like stock still.
You feel guilty because you are adding to the destruction of the evironment.
As far as getting a high flow cat that is XX inches long, PM SMSP on here. He can weld together a custom high flow cat for ~$150 (you have to find out from him the actual cost though). As far as too complicated, don't be so lazy and do things properly.
Sorry for coming across as an a$$ but I take offense to people just disregarding rules that are put in place to protect everyone, it is very selfish to ignore them for personal gain.
Zimmlude and OTHER PLEASE READ,
The problem is really hard to solve because if I want to install the ECS, I am going to have to bypass the CAT (before the CAT) or take the place of the CAT. And Bypassing the CAT means modifying the stock exhaust or modifying the header (I have a mugen header and modifying the stock exhaust means cutting out the resonator which means buying more piping and now I don't have a resonator). This is why bypassing the CAT through modifying the piping around it is so difficult, so the only choices I had was to take the place of the CAT. And taking the place of the CAT meant that I only have about 15 inches to work with to add a custom CAT and the YPIPE (which is very difficult because the YPIPE stock length is 10 inches and modifying it to smallest length it would be around 6.5 inches) means that I have 8.5 inches MAX to make a cat, and there will STILL be no room for a o2 bung.
So guys, I deeply respect the environment, hearing global warning news makes me scared and today I saw a couple and a kid and I put my gear into neutral, but like all of you guys, I want an exhaust system, but a regular CAT-BACK exhaust doesn't work for me because of the annoying sound that is the result of it, so now I can just switch a button and have a crazy loud and very fun exhaust system temporarily.
Again, sorry.

We don't care about your noise pollution.
We care about the enviromental pollution. A catalytic converter eliminates 90% of your car's tailpipe emissions.
That's a LOT.
