switching internal to external coil

i currently have a jdm h22 installed with the stock distributor with internal coil. i might be having some distributor problems and if im going to buy a new one i am going to switch it over to external coil. is all i need to switch it over an external coil distributor, and the coil? i have an msd already so that is taken care of. am i missing anything? thanks

Hey,

I was able to covert the internal coil dist to an external coil. All I had to do was add one wire and get a different cap. I am not sure if it will work on a car already wired for internal though. The problem you run into is the fact that the plug for the external coil is not outside the distributor and I am not sure where each of the wires goes from that plug. It might be possible though.

On external coil distributors there is anextra wire running out of it and into the larger grey plug, The wire is green and runs to one of the corners of the plug. Be carful because there are two green wires going through that plug. You would have to pick up this wire and attach it to the white trigger wire for the MSD. You would then need to run a 12volt switched feed to the thin red wire on the MSD and then hook up the external coil to the thin orange and thin black wires from the MSD. I would suggest getting an aftermarket coil for this, like the Blaster SS (what I have).

I hope that this made sence. I just worked it out right now.

Any other questions just ask,

Later
