sick.. i'm read the insttructions on how to remove a shift knob (gen5) and it says to push down firmly and twist counter clockwise....


cant seem to get the factory knob off.

can someone gimme a tip?

The stock knob?

Get a screwdriver, wedge it in between the knob and the silver plastic thing, and use it to split them. Then you can unscrew your knob.

The boot is held to the silver thing via a zip-tie - if you cut that tie, it's a PITA to get another one on.

no it's not... all you have to do is take the center console off. yea, i guess it IS a PITA. but then again, you only do it once.

Just hold firmly and push the top of the shift boot down. Give it some power and the boot should snap right off. Then you can twist the shift knob counterclockwise.

To clarify...
The stock shift knob has two retaining tabs attached to it at the base of the knob. These tabs clip on the silver plastic ring which secures the boot in place. Before removing the knob, you must detach those tabs by pushing them in. The tabs are located opposite each other front and rear of the knob's base. Grab hold of the top of the boot with your thumb and index finger, just below the silver ring, and squeeze while pushing downward on the boot. The tabs should release and the boot will drop. Then, twist the knob off counterclockwise. You may need to apply some strength to turn it.

Huh? To take the knob off all you need to do is seperate the sliver trim piece from the knob and twist the knob off. As Spite said the silver trim piece is attached to the boot by a zip tie that can be cut off. Removing the center console with the boot still attached to the knob would be a PITA. It's much easier to speperate the boot from the knob, remove the knob and then take out the center console.

Or did you mean putting the zip tie back on was not that hard?

uhhh

i did what vtecrespect said, and it worked easily. there were no zipties or anything so i dunno what you guys are talking about.

now my question is, how do you attach the boot to aftermarket knobs? the stock knob has retainer clips so it snaps onto the boot to hold it up... but with an aftermarket knob like momo's, they dont have those clips... so how do you guys do this?

If you flip the boot inside out you will see a zip tie that holds the silver clip (the thing that the stock knob clips into) to the boot. If you cut the zip tie you can then use zip ties to attach the boot to the shift lever (without the silver piece). This will keep the boot in place while you are driving. Or you could buy a momo boot that screws onto the knob.
