Rust inside the trunk ! How to clean up?

Summer is coming! Today i had time to clean my car a bit .... The owner before me for sure didn't treat this baby good. Look inside the trunk, it's all rusted. There wasn't even a screw to hold the spare tire. I washed & cleaned thoroughly with CLR metal shine. Worked good so far , though the remaining rust i don't know what should i do.

Should i sand everything with sanding machine to sand till i see the metal and then spray with some gray?

Anyone attempted this? A grey color code will be appreciated.
Thank you very much everyone for reading.

ouch! i would def sand everything down to bare metal. i would even check under the car to see if the sheet metal is in need of repair as well. after sanding inside, spray primer. underneath your car, i would spray some undercoater coating or that tar stuff. your paint code should be on your drivers door jamb. it should be a letter, then a dash, then some numbers (b-95p, r-81) if its not there, just tell us the year of your car and im sure someone can identify the paint code

be SURE to mask your car off very well or you will not enjoy cleaning up overspray

thank you! I need the paint code for the grey.

Prelude 1999 Type SH - 11th VIN letter is C
Going to sand down everything definately.
What did you mean by spray some undercoater coating or tar stuff under? Does it mean i need to jack up the car? Thanks!!

Should i start using some heavy grid? 400 , 600 & 800? Or with a drill then attach a paint stripper?

your color is Crystal Blue Metallic.

link for painting inside your trunk. ignore where they say to put the body filler. How to Prepare for Car Painting | DoItYourself.com
AutoBody101.com :: Index

undercoating you will probably need your car on jackstands. its that stuff you see on the bottom of your car. it can be purchased at paint stores or auto supply stores like autozone etc

one thing i gotta stress is tape off/mask off your entire car! overspray is not your car.

im in no way a paint pronot even close

Cant really tell how bad it is in the pic. Hopefully its not all the way through. let us know how this works out my buddys back floor panel is like this. We fixed the leak sanded it both from inside and underneath but it was to bad. primered it for now to stop it from rusting more. Dontbuyprelude.. if the metal is to thin do you believe bondo would help or is that just adding to the problem? I guess there is always cut out and new metal and rivets.(I would use that as last option)

bondo will not fix it unfortunately.he metal will be too thin. body filler will be a pathetic band aid so to speak. best bet is to cut out and replace the rusted section

Mines only rusted on the surface, no holes or anything. A chance i discovered this asap.

Can anyone tell me whats in the hole? I tried to touch it, it feels like cloth or something. I tried to poke it, it was poke-able. It didn't feel hard or anything.

Before doing anything, I would definitely find and fix the trunk leak first.

I did try to pour water into the trunk to see if there was any sort of leaks but there was none. Well there was one coming from the back of the right side rear passenger i think. It was close to the exhaust pipe if i'm not mistaken......

I'm not sure but this can explain why my rear seats are sometimes wet?

The most common leak is from the taillight gaskets. This makes sense considering you found a leak at the back close to the exhaust. Mine leaked from the gaskets and replacing them fixed all my leaks. Also look at the moonroof drain tubes and make sure they aren't clogged. Water can overflow from them down in to the trunk.

When water collects in the trunk, it will move forward when you brake causing your rear seats to get wet.

^X2 . . . couldn't believe how much water could get in due to a worn tail lamp gasket - it was only my rear passenger side one. Easy fix and no problems at all since. I did the moonroof drain tubes too while I was back there, spraying compressed air into them.
