I am currently selling my 2000 Electron Blue Pearl Civic Si because of theft reasons. The car has been broken into numerous times, despite my alarm and other theft deterrents. The car is not even modded besides it being lowered. I live in Southern California, and it appears that civics / integras are hot right now. Because I am attending college, I do not have the time nor access to watch over the car. I just want to get rid of it before I end up paying more money to fix the damages theives leave, or before it is completely gone.
So - I am interested in purchasing a 5th Generation prelude, but am wondering if I will have the same problem as I do with the Civic Si. I really do not know how theft is for the Prelude, and just wanted to ask you guys for your thoughts?
From what I think - because the Prelude doesn't really have universal parts like the Civic or Integra, theft would be considerably lower, assuming I were to have an alarm / other theft detterents. Also - it seems to be in a different category than the civic / integra (more-so like an RSX of Accord Coupe)
Anyhow I would greatly appreciate it if you could give me your thoughts ...
your insurance will probably be a lot lower too because civic's and integra's are on the top of the stolen lists.
i went from a 96 integra LS (*the the GSR and type-r insurance is a lot higher) and it was 320 a month to insure me, into a 2001 honda prelude type-SH , and its only 210 a month.
Not compared to an Integra, but don't discount it entirely. It's a dubious distinction, but 'ludes are indeed quite popular with thieves; our engines are nothing to sneeze at! It's possible things are different now with the K-series in the RSXs, but check out this report on cars from '99-01 .
I live in socal around the garden grove/westminster area. I havent had any type of break in with my 5th gen. I have volks, lip kit, full audio system, and had some recaros too.
I guess it depends what type of neighborhood you live in. My whole neighborhood are mostly mid-upper aged people so maybe thats why also. And when I go somewhere I dont really leave my car unattended for long periods either. Just make sure to get one of those pager system alarms
My insurance agent told me the Integra was #1 per capita and Prelude was #2. I know it's not on the list given on the CNN site but that's claims per 1000 vehicles. My agent told me Prelude is #2 per vehicles on the road and percentage of them broken into/stolen. However my friend had his Civic SI stolen 3 times and it's stock while my Lude is modded and it's been broken into once.

I had my 1998 Civic stolen, and I bought a 5th gen because it has an immobilizer and isn't as hot of a theft target. A lot of the parts from a Prelude can't be swapped into Intergras/Civics. Yes, the engine can (at least into a Civic, I don't think I've seen an H-series in a Teg), but the immobilizer is a theft deterrant, IMHO. When I had my Civic recovered after it was stolen, the dealership showed me exactally how the stole my car. It took about 20 seconds – no lie. I feel a bit better having something that isn't stolen as much.
As far as the insurance agents info, you've got to remember there aren't nearly as many Preludes on the streets as there are Civics.

the prelude is not #2....your insurance musta lied to you or something.
the list from CNN is 3-4 years old. i dont think the prelude is any longer on the list since the release of the RSX type-S

I only wish that was true. I live right outside Annapolis, MD which is home to a lot of upper-middle class and upper class folks. Age-wise, its generally early 30's through elderly (after high school, everybody leaves)
My car got vandalized several times and was attempted stolen a few months ago from a Park and Ride where BMW's, Benz's, Caddy's, etc frequently park (and never get touched).
Prelude should be much better than a civic or a teg but its still a Honda and its still a target
Ok, here's the deal... a 96-00 Civic, or a 94+ integra... you don't need an immobilizer for it to start. I used to be a repo man. ask anyone here... it's very easy to steal these cars if you know how to do it.
01+ civics, RSX, Accords, preludes, and almost all acuras have an immobilizer system.
in reposessing cars, I've gotten past the system, but to do that, you need a special code in the ecu that only the finance company has.
and I know a prelude is much less likely to get stolen then a civic. you put a 01 EBP lude next to a 00 EBP Si in Irvington NJ guess which is more likely to not be there after 2 days?
neither will be there after 4 but that's just irvington.
