Philips Vision Plus Review w/Pics

I have been quite disappointed with the oem prelude headlight bulbs. The color temperature is too low and the light projected falls along too narrow and too short a path. A quick search of Prelude Online points to Philips Vision Plus bulbs as brighter and whiter than stock without pushing the wattage or burning out within weeks of installation.

With this in mind I ordered a set of 4 bulbs from AutolampsOnline.com with plans to replace both my low beams and high beams with Philips Vision Plus H1 bulbs. The service from autolamps online was effective if a bit laconic (no order confirmation emails or shipment confirmations).

The first thing that stuck me upon recieving the bulbs is the packaging. What were they thinking? Are these the bulbs of aryan youth? It hurts my ego to be putting things in my car that come in packages with teddy bears and little girls. Exhibit A:

A note about the photos in this review: Usually when individuals post photos of lights on this board they do not take a number of factors into account. Shutter speed, ISO speed, aperture, and white balance all come into play when trying to take realistic comparison shots of light sources at night. In order to reduce these variables as much as possible, I took all of these photographs at 1/4 second exposure, ISO 50, an aperture of 5 and the white balanced locked into a single setting) These shots were taken on the same night from the same distance with the same camera using the same exposure settings.

Here are some baseline shots of the OEM lights.

OEM Low Beams:

OEM High Beams:

As you can see the spread of light on the garage is narrow and on the yellowish side.

Below are the same shots with Philps Vision Plus lamps installed in both the high beam and low beam sockets.

Philips Low Beams:

Philips High Beams

While the differences are relatively subtle, road visibility is greatly improves with the Vision Plus bulbs. While the color temperature is not as high as I had anticipated, nor the low beam improvements quite as significant as some other reviews may indicate, the difference from stock is still quite noticeable. The most notable improvement on low beams was the visibility of the edges of the road. Sharp turns at night are greatly improved with the ability to see through the turn through the wide spread the Philips bulbs provides.

Perhaps more significant are the improvements with the high beams. The spread appears to be much more solid, consistent, and whiter than stock. Country and back roads are now much more easily navigated with the extra light these bulbs provide.

If your primary concern is getting more light on the road, I can't imagine a more effective non HID solution than the Vision Plus bulbs. From a price to performance standpoint they have to be superior to the Piaas, and traditionally Philips products should have excellent build quality and longevity.

Now if only they would change the packaging...

obrigado

No the Phillips bulbs aren't anywhere near as white as the other aftermarket companies builbs. This is because they do not use a incredibly thick color filter like PIAA uses. They give off more light than the PIAA's by a great margin and increase visibility which most other bulbs don't do becuase of striving toward white.

My main concern is that I'm afraid that my headlights will blind people...does Phillip Vision Plus irritate your eyes (can't really tell from pics)?

I think Aaron actually did get them to see better. His night vision is pretty bad because of his eyes so from what he told me he was getting it because it was his best shot of real improved vision without glare and stuff. I would probably get it just to look cool but I think Aaron actually did have rational intentions.

Nice write up! I am actually shopping around for new bulbs, and couldn't decide which ones to get; I don't know who is better than who, I just want a nice bright light. I think you have helped me choose which bulbs to get. Thanks!

i have had these for 5 months now, and no problems. not as bright as some aftermarket bulbs i have used, but i do not get high-beamed nor do i have to replace them every month or two. very good bulb and they are rather cheap.

nice write-up!

I'm getting HID to see better. Running right over and squashing a possum with my lude on an unlit highway was the deciding factor. I didn't see that possum until I was right on top of it.

They really aren't that much whiter than stock, and from simply looking at the car at night I doubt they will blind people. Philips is a pretty big company, and are OEM providers for a number of makes. I doubt they would sell a product that is blinding, and would have to say that I don't consider the Vision Plus to be at all blinding.

obrigado

Hmm.. actually, i needed a bulb fast and went to the dealer, they gave me a Phillips head light for like 9 bucks.
So I guess they do OEM parts for Hondas..
