PC in the 5g is complete...

Well... As of 9pm tonight, it is finished... Mostly... Just going to repaint the monitor bezel and work on some of the audio problems. Otherwise it posts fine and runs great.

I, of course, didn't take any good day shots, but new pics:

Amp is mounted next to the CPU in the trunk. I'll upload more pics of the install tomorrow.

*** I ended up drilling two holes on the front of the computer case and bolting it directly to the spare tire cover, actually has a clean look. I used the cloth peice that covers over the rear seat to trunk area to hide all of the wires. So far, so good. I am nearly done, just need to tweak some things on it to make it run better. But overall I am happy with it!

I just need to resand the bezel... I was not happy, some grooves in that annoy me.

Otherwise it's running great. I was sitting in my car earlier on the internet... Just need to get a better antenna for the wifi and look into doing bluetooth and cell-phone internet

What gave you the inspiration for a poject like this? Is it a show car or do you get THAT bored on long drives? Can't wait for day pics. There will always be grooves that annoy you, but no one else will ever look at them... TRUST ME. They won't see past the fact there is a PC integrated into the car.

I thought the wires were clean, but I just ran out there to snap a pic... But either way.

The weight of the two of them makes the board fold in a bit. I am going to place something below them to balance it back out.... and hide those god awful wires.

Inspiration wise? I am a nerd... But other than that I love taking trips and going places. I wanted to have a GPS solution... but also a movie solution, song solution, place to upload my pics solution... etc etc... I finally decided the most cost-effective solution I could get was to build a PC...

I came across www.mp3car.com and saw the THOUSANDS of others that have done this and finally decided to give her a try. I believe there is a 4g on the board that has something done. I have never seen his setup but I remember reading a post about it.

One Q: How does the HD handle bumps? I heard that shaking, josling, etc is very bad. All mine are in cases used indoors lol.

So far mine is fine, albeit it has only been in for 2 hours

Expanding on that though, on mp3car people have brought this subject up. There are people that are on there running 3.5" (standard HDDs) with subs going, bumps, swirving, etc etc.... They have had their harddrives running from months to years.

If I do end up getting a corrupt HDD from the driving, I will switch to 2.5" (laptop) which can take some hard abuse. Im not the easiest on my laptop and she is still ticking fine after 2 years.

Maybe you could put rubber or something else to absorb shock on the hardrive rack. That way it would be so tied to the case's movement.

i did a car pc for my friends land cruiser.

it's an awesome project that i would want to implement in my own lude if i can get the funds together.

by the way, if anyone is looking for a GPS solution for their carpc or laptop... amazon.com has Microsoft streets & trips 2006 for $89 bucks!! (includes the usb gps receiver)

are you using a touch screen? i'm sure everyone wants to see pics of your trim that you customized or fabbed for the monitor

good job!

Yes Lilliput 7" touch screen. I also have a mouse and keyboard in the car,... just incase..

$89 is a good deal for Streets and Trips -- Only negative thing about it is its not the easiest to use in a car setup. But still for the receiver and that its good. I like S&T because they have extensive points of interests.

So far the only way I can get access is through Wifi.. I am getting a better antenna to mount on the rear speaker deck. Verizon makes a PCI card to get wireless access (like a cell phone) OR I can get T-Mobile, Verizon, or Cingular phone for internet access. Using blue tooth technology you could leave the phone in your pocket, have a blue tooth receiver up in the front of the car, and connect to the internet through your phone. I plan on doing this later on.

So far I will have to use hotspots to get online. The nice thing about that is at least almost every truck stop on the highway has wifi now. I am stuck with Nextel right now, with my contract, and if I want anything through them it costs an arm and a leg a month.

Verizon cards work well. My company uses them. I think the hardware is pretty cheap now... like $50-60 for the card and the service is something like $60/month for unlimited.
