Our 5th gen Keys.........

Hey guys, I'm about to go make another copy of my Lude's key for home cuz I have the only copy cuz the damn dealer only gave me one key (I got my car used).

Now do I have to go to a Honda dealer and get there cuz of the immobolizer thingy or can I go to like Orchard and get one there??

And if I have to get one at the dealer, how much would it cost??

TIA....

I don't think so...why would a cheapo "Type R" generic key be compatible with your Prelude-specific Honda key?

There is a chip in the key and it needs to be programmed to work with your car. You can get honda to make you a key that is not programmed for around $5 but you can't drive the car with it. BTW did you get a red key when you bought your car? Cause I'm pretty sure the techs need that to program new keys.

When you take it, you have to have all of your keys there or the others will get voided out and wont work... When they do it, they need the red key and your car there. Here they cost $60 too. I didnt get my valet key when I got mine used and told them and the dealer that I bought it off of got me one on their bill along with a new black key. That makes 3 black keys, one valet, and one red...

i was charged $20 for one extra black key (i also bought mine used and it only had the one black key). if that's all you need, that should be the price.

There's also that little number tag (like a little key tag) that goes witht ehred key - you can use that as well to get them reprogrammed.

Huh what the hell??

Now there's a red key now?? What the hell does the red key do??

As u can see, when I got my car, they only gave me 1 black key and that was it.... And also the lil damn lock/unlock remote and nothing else....

Can someone please explain what the red key is for??

When I was talkin about those Type R uncut keys, some of those companies/stores have these for sale, but I'm also curious as to why would people buy them if they won't work??

Thanx.....

When I did it though, they needed both the number tag and the key...

The red key is the programming key for all of the other keys. If you ever get spares made you need this key. You have to get all keys programed to the same and the Red key helps do this along with reporgraming the car.

I took my black key and car to the dealer
who was able to provide a duplicate with chip programmed
to match the original in about 30 minutes for $25.
No red key required.

As Darth said the red key is for programming new keys. The tag, I believe, is so they can cut your key (the code tells them how to cut it). When I went in and got a new key (not programmed as of yet) I didn't have the tag and they looked the key up via the VIN and cut it that way.

As for those stupid Type R keys, they sell them cause there are morons that would buy that crap. And they will work in other generation preludes since only the 5th gen uses the immobilizer system. Those keys aren't generation specific you know. In fact if you bothered to read that ebay add it says right in the add that it will not work on cars that have chips in the keys (i.e. immobilizer system).
