Moonroof, or no moonroof?

I am currently on a waiting list for a custom weld-in cage...which leaves me with about a month to decide - do I leave the current moonroof on, or should i just plug the damn thing up with carbon fiber and bask in some weight reduction? Whatever my decision is, it'll be relatively permanent because the cage will block access to doing anything to the roof.

-i dont use the roof often if at all...once every 2 months or so I might have cracked it open.
-itd be a nice 40 some lbs to pull outta the car

Whats your opinion, any negative or positive effects?

Once every two months? Get rid of it - I never use mine either. And 40+ pounds is a LOT when it's at the tippy-top of the car.

Ditch it! It's just needless weight if you don't use it.

sounds like your on your way to an all out race car...I'd ditch it, since weight is such an issue with racing.

if you really are putting in a cage, why not remove the headliner, sunroof and everything. That way it will be farther from your head inside the car. Failing that, get a type-s headliner so you don't have a dumb gap!

Huh? This should be a no brainer. Cage == no sunroof. If this is a proper cage and not a rollbar I'd say rip the entire interior out and the sunroof. You'll end up saving 50 lbs with all that stuff out (which will offset the weight of your cage).

Take lots of pics when done!!

Do you save 40 lbs. by removing just the moonroof glass or the motor as well?

I'd only do it if you are serious about making the car fast. If this is going to be your only weight reduction, then no. Now if you pulled your ac, sound deading material and other items then yes.

carol, i don't know you too well, so I have no idea what you are trying to do with your car or how you use it.
i view putting a cage (not just a rollbar) in on the same level as deciding to make the car a track-only beast.
if racing your car is your plan, i say take it out completely.
if making it a "show car" keep the motor, but replace the glass with a CF sheet for extra points.

Do it. That is to say if this is going to be a race car. I would rip the whole car apart a/c interior = carpets, but you gotta keep the dash looking nice. haha. Take out the sunroof since your rolling with that cage anyways. Tell me though whats your plan you got going for this car?

this car is really never on the street. basically gonna be a track car...might throw it in a few shows for the heck of it. it'll be a "nice" track car - i still want it to be kept aesthetically "pleasing" to the eye.

taking the motor out is a no brainer if the cf plug is going in - why bother keeping the weight there? lol

Your car is too purdy for the track Carol

Definitely take the moonroof out if you're putting the cage in though. I often wish the Preludes didn't even come with a moonroof :/

If I were you I'd skip the CF plug and do a fully weld in metal plug of the sunroof hole. I'm planning on getting this done to mine, but I have to find the time and money. DR has his done -- it looks like there wasn't any sunroof to begin with. It will look the best! Also I think many sanctioning bodies wouldn't go for just the CF plug AFAIK.

If its just gonna be a track car i would sell all those mugen goodies cause that crap is gonna get wrecked. Just get stock bumper and sides, at most maybe a type s lip. That stuff is gonna crack cause its fiber glass. Keep the wheels though. Too damn pimp to lose.

I was joking to have the motor open and close the cf plug!

Do what DR did. Way better!

I got it done for $500 at some ghetto body shop that specializes in ricer body kits. They cut out a section of a red Prelude hood to fill the hole and then bonded the top to fill in the gaps. I do not have a headliner since this is a racecar.
Now if you have the time and money and you want it to be perfect, find a Type S top and Type S headliner and have a good body shop install it.

Here are a couple install pics
