JDM h22a VTEC swap concerns..

to those who have done engine swaps to the JDM h22a VTEC engine..
as you may or may not know, im looking to buy a 4th gen vtec lude. the rarity of these cars is astounding. maybe thats a reason why i want it so much.
anyway, ive seen a few that have JDM h22a engine swaps in them. are there any special things that i should look out for in cars that have this swap? any difficulties while doing the installation? maybe not difficulties, but caveats that i should be aware of? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

do compression and leak down tests on the motor before you buy the car. i believe 220 is good for the jdm with 10.6:1. a lot of these jdm motors are just sold without any testing.

when you do the jdm swap a couple things are RHD oriented. make sure they are swapped correctly. check the balancer, sometimes they get bent up. and you do know that its almost impossible to legally smog that motor right?

following is some stuff i posted elsewhere:

<<<the distributor for one...jdm has internal coil. you're jdm ecm will be able to handle it but with what wiring harness? they CAN be rewired for the usdm harnesses, i've seen it before, but never done it. but if you plan on getting an msd coil you could just use your 2.3 dist.

-fuel rail. RHD motor so the fittings are opposite from out LHD cars. either get aftermarket rail, use your h23, or have a fuel line custom made from the filter to the fitting on the rail which is on the right of the motor...3 feet maybe?

-a/c. if you dont want to pay to have the a/c recharged and risk having the jdm compressor fail, if it has one, you can use your usdm. that a lone is risky cause the pulleys are different. but i've had my h23 compressor running off the jdm balancer no problems

-injectors. i found that with my jdm and a couple others i've helped to install, the injectors really dont take sitting for 4+ years too well. i sent mine to RC engineering. 104 shipped back to me. they reported 2 of them were dripping, 1 was clogged, and 1 was semi ok. at first i started my motor, ran like shiit, so i put in the 2.3 injectors for limp mode while the 2.2's were away. if you do this do NOT beat on her. the 2.3 injectors are 240cc's, jdm 2.2 are 350cc's. i smogged my car while it was running 2.3 injectors and NOX was almost 2 times the limit...about 2800ppm. >>>

not all will apply to your purchasing the car with swap already done, but at least you'll know what should have been done.
here's the original post:
H22 in the Si..

thanks for the info. now regarding this one part, how did you get yours to pass the inspection smog test that you speak of? so all people who have jdm swaps wont pass inspection?

i always thought the words "annoying" and "fast" should never be together.

RC had them back to me in 3 days. $104 total. i got my read out and everyone lists 350cc's or a little over it so im very happy with what they've done. they did confirm what i mentioned before about 3 of the injectors running like poop.

i sent them out looking like poop too. got them back looking BRAND NEW!! new seals, new and redesigned filter. i'd recommend them anyday.

they way i diagnosed it was before i even started up the motor. i changed the fuel rail to my 2.3 rail, so i pulled the injectors to clean them off and the spacers. i saw earlier that there was water in the intake plenum and some poured out of the fuel rail. i saw minor rust on the tip of the injectors. i didn't want to chance it so i put in the 2.3 injectors as well for limp mode...just to get her started.

later on that month i swaped in the jdm's to see if they were in fact bad. they were, i have an a/f guage and it was full lean the whole time. ran like **** and no throttle response. i didn't even drive her, just swapped back the 2.3's and proceded to send the jdm's to RC.

so you'd be the right person to ask.. how would a layman like myself be able to pass inspection? are there any mods that can be done to the motor?

hehhhe, good luck! this motor STINKS litterally. i have no cat and 2 and 1/2 ince exhaust and let me tell u when i am at a stop light this motor reeks. u can just tell its a major polluter. i live where we dont need inspections so i dont have to worry bout that sorta thing. and i dont thing there is anything u can really do to make it pass a smog test... =(

get any year motor you like. problem is the wiring harness. you'll either need to keep it obdII or you can buy the full wiring harness and go obdI. up to you....or you pocket whichever makes the decisions.

im not familiar with the 1st gen obdII. maybe you can ask x01vtec. he's a 96 vtec so maybe he can help you out.

on the obdI si's you can just wire in the vtec and you're done. not sure about the obdII.

good luck
