More than a brand new one.

Seriously why? You just want a parts car? Sure it's doable. Expect shipping to cost in the 3-4k range (maybe). Want to drive it around on a track? Sure, doable.

Want to drive it on the street? Doubtful and takes a lot of time and paperwork.

Judging by your post, I doubt you have the know how or contacts to get this done so I would just suggest finding a prelude here and modifying it to RHD or jdm, which ever you like.

I handle the importing of ultrasound, and xray machines for my company.. and trust me, if you don't have any contacts, or are buying in bulk, don't bother. You'll pay at least double what its worth in the end.

i've got contacts, i can get shipping itself for 1,800. i just don't know how much getting it in the country will cost. and since it is "similar to a us model" it will most likely already conform to all FMVSS and EPA standards. and...i do know a lot about cars and the laws. I'm an NYS mechanic. I just didn't know some of the pricing. And the reason that i would want to ship a car would be for street, i'd rather import an RHD car than have to convert it to RHD which would cost 2,200 for a front end clip without the shipping from Japan.

well if you know everything and have all of these great contacts, why bother asking?

Or do you think that there is some large faction of RHD preludes in the US that have had them all imported from JDM-land and just aren't telling you the ridiculously low prices they paid?

but why import a lude?if you're going to go through that much trouble then import something truly menacing like a skyline R34 or a JDM supra not a lude.

There's a guy here that imported a RHD from Canada to where he lived at in Indiana I believe.

^and there is someone who also converted his 4th gen to RHD. I remember him taking pictures of the cop inspecting the car and it looked like he had a hard on.

To the OP: Again, it's not that easy but sure, you seem like you've got EVERYTHING under control, just go for it. Be sure to post once you've imported the, I can't wait to see this thing...

I guess people in the east coast have a better chance of getting an import as suppose to someone here in california.

A few of my Canadian friends have mentioned picking up a RHD in Canada, previously imported. That would most likely be both the cheapest and least troublesome route.

Something to consider, at any rate.

maybe i want to do it myself so i could be used to it, so when i have the money for a skyline i know exactly where to go and what to do. and the reason im asking is if maybe some people who have done it would give me some tips to make it easier and cheaper instead of you being a dick about how i want to spend MY money and MY time. if you want to dis what want to do, at least make a good point or stay away from my topic. and to the person a couple posts down, i do want a skyline, but before i import one i want to have the money to buy everything that i want for it all at once.

You seriously need to read this. This thread has some of the best, and most to-the-point info. It was one of the best discussions about importing ever, and it actually got somewhere.

It states exactly what makes it so.......impossible.

Don't you mean a AE86?^^^

And yes, that thread is really sad because it gives you a good look at reality, but it is great because it is so concentrated on such awesome information and research.

I've thought of bringing my wife's 4th gen 4WS Si (from Malaysia) which is RHD and all the JDM goodies. But, even with my father-in-law's connections there, it's still too cost prohibitive to bring it here.

i knoiw in canada(edmonton specifically) there are many companies that will import you the car of your choice. However being there is a 15 year rule, you may not be abkle to register or insure it. DJ Auto of edmonton will do it for you and so will Sumuru Automotive; however most of the time the people they import for ask for rx7's, supras, skylines and the like, preludes are not really on the wanted list. I would love to import a 1998 prelude sir S but not for a couple of years, then that wya i could DD it.

how would you get it to pass emissions in ny? the scanner they use doesn't read a jdm ecu. i always had to get an sticker for $300 a year from the shady mechanic with my type s swap.

^^^Use a USDM ecu.......

I'm pretty sure the specs for them are pretty close if not identical, so performance probably wouldn't change.

If you care that much....do it the way you are doing it now....
