comparing the whole set of shocks:
when pressing the pistons in they should all feel like the same pressure is needed to compress each of them fully.

inspecting each one:
when pressing the piston in they should be smooth going in and out of the cylinder, not jerky which would indicate blown.

thats what I learned in school, anyone else feel free to correct me or add...

they should have a good amount of resistance needed to compress them. My KYB AGX shocks, brand new, were too stiff to compress completely, (i'm 5'11" 175lbs, for a comparitive reference). Maybe I'm weak, but that's what I can offer to the discussion.

its typically blown if it will not rebound....jus compress the shock and it should return back to its rebounded state within seconds....

A very stiff Koni or other adjustable may take forever to rebound- that's more an indication of stiffness rather than blown or not blown.

Most "blown" shocks will not travel smoothly indicating some damage to through the stroke, or take very little effort to compress.

Look for fuid leaks where the rod goes into the body. Blown shocks usually result from and/or are accompanied by leaking fluid.

I just took my blown KYBs off and they looked bad. There was oil all over and they would not even rebound after I compressed them by hand.
