How to re-torque lug nuts?

This is what i normally do and i'm currious if it is correct.

(Tighten down always in a star pattern)
1. Firmly tighten the lugnuts while the wheel is off the ground.
2. Lower wheel to touch ground, but not fully down.
3. Torque to about 75% of spec, 60flbs.
4. Lower car all the way down.
5. Complete torque to full spec, 80flbs.
6. Drive a bit.
7. Re-torque.

For step 7, are u suppose to loosen the nuts first, then re-torque...or are u simply checking the original torque so that the nut hasn't loosened any?

yes re-torque means just to check it again, just tighten them if necessary. But you dont have to loosen them first.

How on earth do you tighten the lugs tight with the wheel in the air!?

hehe...i just re-read Ng luder's post and that does seem impossible. I may be anal, but at the very least u gotta lower the car to torque properly.

Well not impossible, but you'd have to get your friend Bubba to hold the wheel in the opposite direction

Impact gun + 80ft/lb torque stick = wheels torqued in the air.

Easy. Auto. Put it in park, and the drive wheels (front) are locked. Pull the ebrake...and the rears are set. Done deal.

Kool-lude...ur method's kinda overkill....

I just mount the wheel, hand tighten it as much as i can...drop the car...torque the lugs to spec...go drive around the block...and re-torque them back to spec again. The latter part is the most important....all those other steps inbetween...i feel bleh about em...

Well...i don't completely agree. I think the most important step is getting the lugs tightened and torqued to spec "in a star pattern". Although re-torqueing is a must (and I always do it), i have never found one lug nut out of spec. But your points are well taken, and i agree that my method is a bit overkill. Maybe i'll eliminate steps 2 and 3.

Really??? that kinda sounds harsh on the trani. I rather bring in down to the ground and then torque.

I'm a Toyota technician. So... I kinda have one of those "all-access" passes. I am buying an air compressor for my garage this winter hopefully.

Yep. Toyota. I'm also in college for Toyota/Lexus auto mechanics. The dealership is my internship.

That's already a given tho. If ppl aren't doing that...they shouldn't be taking off the wheel...

I am getting a slight vibration sometime at 50 mph plus, i have recently removed my left front wheel, do you guys think it could be a tightening problem, i did the star pattern, so i do not know what it is. It like a slight rhythmic vibration in the gas pedal.

you worry too much

tighten as tight with it off the ground then just torque to 80 when you lower it
