grease in the wheel well?

sounds like a cv boot is torn... unless you can see the fluid coming from the shock itself

shock knock and blown shock are two different things. push down your suspension then release, when it is bouncy instead of just going back up, you got a blown shock.

the grease def. sounds like a cv boot problem. that might also be causing your noise

if your shocks are blown when you hit a bump your car will bounce up and down a few times, where as if they are still good then you should only feel the bump, no bouncing afterwards.

another common symptom of a blown shock can be irregular tire wear. not where it wears on the out and not on the inside, but when it is kinda wavy from the inside to the outside like this

if you blow the cv boot, all the grease will fly off and eventually the cv joint will wear out from lack of lubrication/dirt in it. You can drive on a CV joint without a boot for a while, but I would replace it asap so you don't have to replace the joint.
