How to "Cook" Tail Light?

I'm trying to take apart my Altrezz tail lights so i can darken the color up a bit and put it the 18 wheeler led taillights. All i need to know is how to loosen up that hot glue inside the light without damaging the lens or other plastic. Any ideas?

preheat an oven to say 350 farenheit, cover your pan with a towel or something that won't burn in the oven. place lens on it and into oven it goes. check on it after say 5-7 mins

PS: i havn't done this yet, so don't be pissed if they melt lol. I'm planning on resealing mine and clearing out the turn signal.

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Farenheit

2. Turn off oven after it reaches that temperature.

3. You can place the tailight on a baking sheet or on aluminum foil on the rack.

4. Let it sit in the oven for 6-8 minutes.

5. Remove tailight and gently pry open the tabs and work your way around.

6. If it becomes hard to pry open after a while, repeat heating instructions.

As for putting them back together, I have heard you can just reheat the taillight and clamp them back together. Or you can locate some of the adhesive and reapply it to join them.

I never tried to reassemble the set of lights that I had. I only did the above procedure to remove projectors from the housing.

DISCLAIMER:
I am in no way responsible if you mess up your taillights or your oven or anything for that matter.

I used all-purpose clear silicone that you can find at your local hardware store to reseal my headlights, and I haven't had problems for past 2 years or so.

wow, you guys are saying 5-7 minutes and 6-8 minutes. i just did my headlights yesterday and the write up for the headlights said 2 minutes. 2 minutes at 350 was more than sufficient. unless they used different glue in the taillights, i think 5-7 and 6-8 minutes is WAY overkill.

You probably had the oven still ON for those 2 minutes.

The procedure that I depicted had the oven ON until it reached 350 degrees Farenheit and then OFF for the 6-8 minutes. The temperature gradient would be cooling exponentially thus why you leave it in there for so long. This was done to ensure you don't melt the housing.

There are different ways to open headlights/taillights.

read the "Painting your Headlight housing [5th gen writeup] " in the FAQ section. I followed this writeup to the "T" and the oven was turned OFF as soon as i stuck the lights in there. 2 minutes was enough to get the glue soft enough to loosen up and yet i felt plenty comfortable that i was not harming the housing or any other components. i'm just letting those of you that are going to attempt this for the first time know, to experiment with a low time of 2-3 minutes on your first light, then adjust accordingly for the second light.

I prefer the hot water method. Take a gallon or two of hot water and microwave it until boiling. Then sit the tailights in there. let sit for a couple minutes. Remove, and the glue will be soft and easy to seperate.

Maybe it shouldn't be boiling. I have never personally tried it. I did the oven thing on my 98-02 accord headlights and it worked like a charm.
But the water method sounds easier.
