High mileage, what mechanic work can be done....

... to make the engine like new again? Someone told me you can do a basic engine rebuild, but I'm not sure what exactly that is.... or how much it will cost.

The reason I'm asking is because I will probably only be able to afford a Lude with high mileage, but I want it to last a lot longer. If I get it for cheap, I won't mind putting 1000 or so in just to extend the life.

For around $1K, you should be able to get a top-end rebuild, including rings, seals, and valves.

If I were to do that at say... 150k miles, how much longer do you think it would last me considering I took care of it well?

150k miles is just broken in. Aside from normal maintenence (belts, plugs, wires, etc.) there is nothing you should need to do. The top end is good for well over 200k miles if the engine is kept with oil in it.
