Hey, should I buy this '87 Lude?!

There is a 2nd Gen Lude near me that only has 78k miles. Does anyone know anything about 2nd Gens, like how many hp, etc? It's an Si by the way. ANY info would be greatly appreciated. Would I be making a huge mistake settling for a 2nd Gen?

If you're looking for something like that, then I would get a diagnostic, and if it's cool, then go for it. It would be a serious plus if it has had a timing belt by now though.

If you can afford it, I'd go for a 3rd gen though. They're more refined, and feel a little more modern (from the limited experience I have with either of them).

I had an 87 si bought it with 152,000 miles on it and drove it to 280,000 till I hydro locked it and killed it. you can bet my 5th gen has a bypass on it

the car was cool but there is no support for it i.e. I could get springs and shocks for it and that was about it for mods. the 5 th gen stock is stiffer then that was with tokico and eibachs. It handled well and was kinda quick 115hp 30 mles to the gallon. never had any major stuff the clutch lasted till about 270,000 then locked up, push it in still would go that was the only really big thing that went. good in the snow with blizzaks

I would snatch it up with out thinking about it if the body and paint are ok check the trunk lid above the Prelude plate the paint goes there a lot and infront of the rear wheel rockers and give the exhaust a good squeeze , flex connector too...

I say get it.

Dudes, I just bought it! Timing belt hasn't been done but it isn't cracked. We're gonna look into getting that done asap though. THIS IS ONE CUTE ASS CAR! I am very happy with it. It's SUPER solid. The engine pulls real hard, nothing "iffy" about it at all. I am VERY happy about it thus far. The clutch needs adjusted, too, but it's all good. The interior is absolutely perfect, not a single sign of wear on either of the seats, etc. I just need to change out the sound system real quick. It's just stock cassette and the rear speakers pop HORRIBLY. But it's all good, what can you expect anyway? There is some rust on all of the tire wells and a little by the moonroof, but nothing that has gone through that bad. It's an 87, who cares. It's going to be a great little car until I graduate college. And no car payments!! That's all I wanted

So does anyone else around here have an 87? Why isn't there a 2nd Gen Forum?

Sweet! If you're going to tear out the stock stereo yourself, I say get some sound deadening material to put down in the process. Seriously reduces vibration. Make sure you buy it cheap.

Congrats! Drive hard, but don't do anything I'd do.

Well, in case you're curious, I am a Panasonic + Polk Audio kinda girl. I am gonna buy this as soon as I can and then I am going to get some 6.5 Polks for the back. Doesn't look like anything is an "EZ Swap" for the front door speakers, but I can live with the stock ones for a bit longer, they aren't toasted like the back ones are. So that's exciting, hopefully I'll have that done within a month. Anyone heard yay or nay on that head unit I just mentioned though? If someone says "it sucks" with no backing it up, that doesn't count, haha. I'm a tried and true Panasonic girl, there's no changing me on that, ha!

The only thing I have to say about that deck is: I hope it doesn't get ganked.

i used to drive an 85 base .. the engine is like 110hp stock i beleive but the mileage on those cars is awesome ...

since you used the word cute, that car should last you a long time. my 85base i got with 155km's on it (just <100kmiles?) it ran awesome for about the 20kmiles i had it and the oil was always clean.

I like the stance and theres more room in that one than there is in 4g/5g between trunk/back seats .. 3g's have more room ..

How much did you get it for? What else came back with the inspection? ... you DID get an inspection didnt you?

with the interior mint you'll love it! ... welcome to the prelude owners club

as for audio, get an alarm... make sure the light in the roof turns on when doors open and shuts off because the relay is hooked up to that light.

any 6.5's for the back are cool, i never changed my stock from speakers but they sounded good still , the rears were all rotted.
any deck would fit but get detach and get an alarm.

No we haven't had it inspected yet, dad's waiting to see when his "guys" are available. Me and dad know enough about cars to look it over and be satisfied. We're not looking for a car that's going to be perfect, we realize what we're getting into buying an '87 and we're willing to deal with that. We spent 26 on it, which is a little high, but we gave him what he wanted because otherwise it would have started a bidding war with the girl who kept calling while we were test-driving (she was pissed that he was letting us drive all the way up from Lincoln to see it first even though she was a few blocks away).

What does "since I used the word cute" imply? Lol. I may be a girl, but that doesn't mean I won't give a car hell. I didn't use to have a '96 VTEC for the looks, let me just say that.

I'm not gonna get an alarm on that silly car. The faceplate is detachable and I always have and always WILL have full coverage.

And gas mileage is KICKING ASS so far! In my Celica, with the exact same size of tank, I had to fill up every 200 miles. I have 185 miles on the tank in the Lude right now and it's still above half full. w00000t!
