Drive home from work and car is running normal. The car sits for about 5 minutes before I'm going to head to Home Depo. The engine turns over like it is going to start, so I back off the key in the ignition. However, it doesn't start (kind of like when you don't turn the key long enough). I try to start it again, it cranks over but it doesn't start. Try again, again, wait a couple of minute, try again, still nothing.
I installed an MSD 6a w/ Blaster 2 Coil about 2 months ago, so I check all of the connections - they are fine. So I re-install the factory coil. The car started.
Since now I have it narrowed down to either the aftermarket ignition or the coil. Is there anyway I can determine which is at fault without buying one or the other?
1. Make sure the ignition switch is in the Off position.
2. Remove the coil wire from the distributor cap and position the terminal so it is approximately 1/2" from a good ground.
3. Disconnect the MSD White wire from the distributor points or the ignition amplifier.
4. Turn the ignition to the On position. DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE.
5. Tap the White wire to ground several times. Each time the wire is pulled away from ground a spark should jump from the coil wire to ground. If spark is present, the ignition is working properly.
If there is no spark:
A. Inspect all of the wiring.
B. Substitute another coil and test again. If there is now spark, the coil is at fault.
C. If there is still no spark, check to make sure there is 12 volts on the small Red wire from the MSD when the key is in the On position. If 12 volts are not present, find another 12 volt source and repeat the test.
D. After inspecting the test procedures and inspecting all of the wiring, there is still no spark, the Ignition is at fault. See the Warranty and Service Page for Information.
Hey, the EXACT same thing happened to me about a month ago. I bought a new coil and hooked up the MSD ignition two days ago, but it still wouldn't start. So I guess I need to replace the ignition too.

That isn't what I wanted to hear. Oh well, I'll try this out and see how it goes. I don't have my nitrous installed yet, so stock coil is fine for now.
