Ghetto Power Steering Fluid Change

My local dealer wants $80 for a Power steering flush...

since I don't feel like paying $80 for a fluid that's less than $10...
can i just do this?...

1. Use a syringe to suck up MOST of the fluid in the resorvoir under the hood...

2. Dump the new fluid in there...

I know it's not replacing all the fluid...
but it's better than nuthing right? kinda like a ATF change...

can i do this? or is this stupid?

The PS fluid in the resovair isnt nearly how much fluid you have in the system. There's a bunch more dirty fluid in the steering rack.

You simply have to disconnect the return hose from the resov. and put in an empty jar. Start the car up, turn the wheel full lock left to right until no more fluid dumps out of the hose. After thats done, you have cleaned out all your old fluid, go ahead and put new PS fluid in.

Keep a good hold of that hose. The fluid comes out with a LOT of pressure! A friend of mine did this without realizing how much pressure there would be, and he ended up spraying PS fluid everywhere!

i did it by myself so when i put the hose in a milk jug, i electrical taped the seam where the tube goes into the jug, so it holds itself up.

One more tip, when the old fluid stops comming out immeditatley turn off the car. You dont want the pump to run dry and burn it out!

Usually on a PS flush- you drain old and put new in at same time
but this takes at least 2 people, possibly 3.
