In which gear do you do dyno runs?

I thought that you should be in the gear that has gear ratio closest to one. In our cars that would be 4th gear. I heard some guys do their runs in third gear. Wouldn’t that give unrealistic data (higher numbers)? In which gear did you dyno your car?

Yes, your supposed to do it in 4th gear. 3rd gear will probably give you higher numbers and would be incorrect.

for automatics tho, wouldnt 3rd gear be the direct drive gear? maybe the other guys' cars were autos? (assuming its a 4speed)

4th gear dyno runs in my 2000 prelude only netted me about 145 hp with my bolt-ons, but still i ran a 15.0 in the 1/4 mile-that was with a muffler tacked onto the end of the exhaust pipe... who knows....everyone said that there was something wrong with my lude, but the 1/4 mile time obviously shows otherwise. in third gear it dynoed at 160 hp.

That would be correct as well. I know with the 350z's, they dyno in 5th with the manuals and 4th with the autos, so I believe you are correct.

Dyno's are not consistent. There are Dynojets, Dynopacks, and Mustang Dyno's, which will all produce different numbers even with the same car on the same day. There's STD numbers and SAE numbers.

My point would be that even though you dyno'd 145 whp, say this was on a Mustang dyno, you probably would have hit around 165 whp on a Dynopack because of the different ways they operate.

actually....when the car was roughly stock....i dynoed on a dynapack at 141hp....later...after most of my bolt-ons, i dynoed on a mustang dyno at 145hp. there's not much difference there, tho...both of those numbers are from 4th gear runs. i was able to do a third gear run on the mustang and that's where i got the 160hp.

Do your A/F tunning with 4th gear, its more accurate and precise.
Then do you final run with 3rd gear if you like a higher reading.
