is it still risky to take off your front license plate in california?...i am planning to take it off bec. i like the way my lude's front look w/o it but having second thoughts bec. of the fine that i may get...anyone from cali. has their front plates removed?
I have been driving around with my front plate on my dash for almost a year now, and I have been fine. The Vehicle Code says that as long as it is no more that 60" off the ground and visible from the front of th car, it is fine.
i don't have holes too on my front bumper that's why i'm itching to get the front plates out...moving violation?, that's the drawback in living in LA but hey, with this fine weather i'll keep my front plates where it is...thanks for all your replies.

I'd be careful with the plate on your dash. If your passenger side airbag blows and the plate is in the wrong place .... there you goes someone's head.
Ive been rolling around with no fonrt plate since right after I got the car (around 8 monthst ago). Ive gotten a ticket, the cop didnt say anything about the plate. I have yet to get pulled over for it, I have yet to have anyone make an comment about it. Keep in mind cops seem to always check out my car between the front body kit, the white wheels, exhaust, etc.
I think it looks a whole lot better with no front plate.
If I ever have a problem with the front plate, I will simply say that I bought it like that, and the DMV didnt say anything about putting on the front plate. Although I suppose if the cop was a jerk enough I would get a ticket.
BTW, Im in Cali.

My car really didn't have a front plate when I bought it. I dunno what the previous owner did with it. My INS company didn't say anything about, neither has the DMV. The only person that has said anything about it was this lazy security guard at my movie theater who left a "Rent-a-cop" "ticket" on my window. It's in my room because I thought it was funny.

i've had my car for 3 years now, w/o ever putting a front license plate on. cops always look at me (not just for my plate, but other stuff too) but they have never pulled me over.
is it cuz i'm lucky? maybe..
is it cuz i'm a girl? probably. hehe
o and yeah it isn't a $10 fixing ticket anymore..
sucks. maybe i should consider putting a plate on too..
i got pulled over 2 times for my side markers and both times the cop went up to the front and looked at my head light and never said anything about the front plate. i remember when i first got the car i put the front plate on my window and a cop drove by really really REALLY slow and just started to stare at me. when i made a left turn i threw the plate in the back seat. the plate has never left my trunk in the past 2 years. unless im cleaning my car. i guess im one of the luckey ones (knock on wood)
I'd say it all depends on luck. I don't have the front plate since the day I bought the car back in June 98, and I have never gotten a ticket for it. I also don't have the front plate on my Integra since the day I bought the car back in March 99, and I haven't gotten a ticket for it when I drive it, however my wife did get one about 1.5 yrs. ago for no front plate and tinted windows. I guess I'm just lucky, 'cuz I got pulled over several times (twice for the exhaust on the Prelude, once for front plate and tinted windows on the Integra, and ......ready for this??? doing over 100mph in the Prelude) and have been driven away without a ticket. It just pure luck.

I dont have a passenger side air bag... I just have to take it down when I do hard turning so it wont fly off.

At the Lude meet in the Bay Area, back in March, I almost got fined 100 bucks for this. Thank god I had my military ID on me ... barely got out of it. The only other place, outside of Cali, that I had problems not having a front plate was Utah (of all places). The South is all good w/ not having a front, as far as I know. This whole move to the South thing is paying off...

Anybody want to buy my Lude? (Will sell in either stock or fairly modded trim).
I've driven the car from the day it was bought (april 00') without a front license plate and haven't gotten any trouble from it. pulled over 3 times (without vwong's luck) (2 speeding tickets and 1 fixit for my super white lights on my side markers) and haven't had any problems. if you live in the bay, there are certain places you should avoid with the front license plate thing. downtown san jose is where i got pulled over for my lights.....cops drive by me all the time where i live (saratoga/san jose limit) and don't give me a look for the lights......i'm not making much sense now wtf...
anyways, my uncle got pulled over in san francisco for not having a license plate....he drives a new es300.....the ticket in frisco for that is $200 or so...that surprised the hell out of me....scared my mom into putting a plate on her 540i. but yeah, personally, i'm keeping mine the way it is....it just looks better that way.
