Friggin Temperature cable broke on me! (again)

After I changed my plugs on Saturday and while I was on my way to the Nissan dealership to try a 350Z, my temperature slider cable broke on me again. It's the second time and I thought I had fixed the cable the first time, but I guess not... Anyhow, I'm sure it has or is going to happen all you 5th genners so here is a write up...

I didn't take pics of the removal of the climate control component... it's fairly simple though. Under the passenger side, look torwards the middle of the console and you'll see a cable that is attached to a stub and a clip. Remove the cable from the clip and the cable from the stub. That's actually the cable that connects to lever that changes the temperature from hot to cold (hot = towards the front of the car, cold = towards the rear of the car).

Then remove the center console trim as if you are removing the radio. Once removed, you will see the 4 philips screws fastening the climate control. Remove all four. Then pull the unit forward and remove the wire harness attached the unit. One is face towards the bottom of the car and the other one is facing towards the front of the car. One you remove the harness, you can take the unit out for examination.

Here is the problem... The cable is all chewed up and should actually under that clip.

Another look...

Remove the screw fastening the slider plate.

Remove the screw fastening the cable clip:

Move the slider towards the right without breaking it! (gently) You'll see that the cable hook can slide off downwards.

Curse at the cable and buy another for 8$ USD.

Update, I don't need to buy a new cable, just turn it around so the chewed up side is not touching the clip and reinstall it.

Another thing you can try is wrapping some electrical tape around the cable in the area that goes in the clip.

Yeah but that's a temporary fix until it eats through the tape... the root of the problem is the rusted cord in the engine bay side. Fix the problem... don't just band aid it.

^^^ Yeah, I still need to check the cable in the engine bay... I have never seen that cable or adjustment arm before (and I don't have the helms yet). Can you tell me where it is?
Thanks!

It's hard to reach - need a set of long pliers to reach it.

sorry to bring this back from the dead. I had come up with a "fix" last year, but I need to replace that cable in the engine bay. I have a couple of questions (for Keith and Phamine especially).

1) is it easier to reach the cable from under the car, or just go at it from the top?

2) do you have the part number for the cable, or can you help me find it?

I have checked all over on www.slhondaparts.com I found the cable used on the interior HERE (between the climate control unit and the lever under the dash), but I cannot find the cable that goes from that lever to the engine bay. Is it #6 HERE?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks!!

Thanks Keith....I know your thread was some time ago but my cable just stripped also a few months ago. Great idea on switching the ends, I'll do that this week once the temperature in these parts goes back up above freezing!
