A/F gauge problem white wire?

ok heres the situation... i hooked up my autometer a/f gauge

Red-Ignition Accesorry
Black-Ground
Purple-Fat solid wire on ECU

when just the red and black wires are hooked up the gauge sits on full rich. then i hooked up the purple wire to the white wire on the ecu with a quick connect. then the gauge lights up really dim on full lean so i drive around the guage gets brighter when i floor it then dims again when i let off all of a sudden the check engine light comes on so i turn around disconnect the purple wire drive around again and the cel goes off and the guage site on green again. so once again i drove home shaved off some of the white casing on the ecu wire and twisted and taped the conncetion between the purple and white wire because i thought it may have had a bad connection but i noticed there was a small red wire inside the white wire?? so i just ignored it and went for another drive the gauge still lit up dim red but now the cel did not appear? did anyone have this problem ive searched this site insideout and havent found anything like the problem im having. Sorry if the post gets confusion i tried to keep it simple

I hooked up my a/f gauge w/ a T-tap a while back.......about a year and a half ago. I finally got my car running again, and it is doing like yours: staying dim at lean, but getting brighter as you rev.

I haven't had a chance to monkey w/ it, but the other night I hit a few bumps and it made the gauge work for a bit, then I hit another bump and it stopped. I believe I just have a bad connection.

I'd try soldering it up and seeing how it acts, as long as you know you have the right wire. Mine was the bottom solid white wire.
