Now this is a 91 Prelude, and I'm just afraid the car is getting close to it's expiration date with the louder muffler issue. I love it to pieces though. If it's the exhaust/muffler, do you know approximately how pricey the fix would be?

under $55.00 shipped I got this muffler on eBay for my 5th gen car to replace the raspy Ghetto Can that it came with. Item #360382376577 the seller was awesome, shipped it out quickly, and it was MUCH better quality than I expected. Everything lined up perfectly. Use the item # to look at the seller and do a search... or just do a search period.
Usually the low sound that you are talking about is a leak in the exhaust somewhere causing your pipe to become a large, low sounding wind instrument.

The popping is
usually a sign of too much fuel entering the cylinder and igniting(leaking injector or bad spray pattern generally) or a bad timing issue causing the fuel to not ignite at the right time. If your exhaust leak is before the o2 sensor, it is possible that the ECU is deciphering that it needs to make the fuel mixture more rich. Find your exhaust problem, and if that doesn't fix things, check the injectors and timing.
Tell-tale sign when searching for a crack or leak is look for black carbon build up. You can take a moist hand towel and wrap it around the area to test, and if the sound goes away, you've found your leak!
Mine is doing this at the moment due to the flex pipe having a fairly large crack. New header and downpipe arriving on the 24th... Can't wait!!! then I can finish working on the tuning.
