Dowel pins on flywheel, how important are they?

When switching out to a new flywheel, do you guys bother taking out the old dowel pins? I'm thinking as long as you bolt all bolts for the pressure plate, its going to be aligned no matter what.

what do you guys think?

EDIT: Crap you're talking about the dowel pins on the flywheel it self NOT the crank so disregard my post. One thing though, before my clutch and flywheel went in I test fitted them and they didn't line up right but then I rotated the clutch some more and found out it fit when rotated the "correct" way.

I think that it takes some of the lateral stress away from the bolt...you'd probably be fine without them, but if it were me I put them in.

I'd put them in, as they do provide some support to the bolts (have you noticed just how small those PP bolts are?). They also assure that the pressure plate is aligned correctly as it will only line up with the dowels one way.

OOOoooooh, gotcha i think were talking about 2 different things. Not the little peg in the flywheel, i think were talking about the KEY that connects from the crank to the flywheel. Its the same as the one on the crank pulley side.

Correct me if im wrong.

We're talking about the little pegs(there are 3 of them) that go in the flywheel, that the PP aligns on to. How hard is it to remove these things? will vise grips do?

I never knew there was a key on the flywheel side, like the one on the crank pulley. Are you sure about this? I dont see why there is a need for this...

hmmm, im pretty sure there is, Trying to remember, the flywheel only goes on one way, so i thought there was one, if not, there was definately some other kind of pin there.

Ok so the ones on the flywheel, i thought those were Cast/machined into the flywheel.
