Difference between JDM 4th and 5th Gen engines?

I was wondering if there is anyway to tell the difference between the JDM 92-96 engines from the 97-00 engines? Also, the transmissions are already remove from them, so there is no codes for the tranny. If there are any external visuals I could look for, please let me know. I would appreciate any input.

H22A is the JDM Type S motor (220PS~217HP)
H22A1 is the USDM 4th gen motor (190HP)
H22A4 is the USDM 5th gen motor (190-200HP)

Didnt answer my question though. I was asking about visuals. I have taken several semesters of calculus and physics, but last time I check, I couldnt calculate HP visually. lol. Thanks though.

Anyone else?

no dude....all JDM engines say H22A on the block 92-01

The way you can tell is the open deck vs. closed deck design, but the would require you to pull the head off...there must be a better way. Isn't there a serial number on the engine, isn't the VIN number?

From a picture, you cant tell(as far as I know). Get the VIN #'s of these motors.

that's a lot of h22s (more on the right side). Can I have one of 'em? And yes there's no way to tell based on the pic. You can only make an estimate based on the mileage.

Actually the easier way to check would be to open up the distributor and see if the CYP sensor is there...on 97-01 Preludes the Cylinder Position Sensor is moved to the Crank area.

BUT....

I'm not sure if this is true of the JDM 5th gens. Maybe DirtyLude could confirm...he has pictures of the Distributor sensors, and I could link you to them if our site wasn't currently down

Those engines are in Singapore, the factory where I am getting my engines from. He imports them to Singapore from Japan, then to me. So they arent all mine. I will be receiving 4 H22A and 2 B16A 2nd Gens soon though.

Later.

You think that is alot of engines. Here are some pics from inside the warehouse. Also, keep in mind that this warehouse is 2 full stories tall. This is only one of 2 floors.

Just thought you would want to drool. Later.

There is a stamp on the block, it looks like a clock (hey that rhymes) It will have "hands" that point to the month day and year the engine was made.

EDIT:
Forgot to tell you where the date codes are, they are under the intake manifold, near the timing belt end of the motor, about where the balancer shaft hump is.
Hope that helps.

Mark post pics of the 5th gen and 4th gen distributors there.

Also if they changed the injectors in the 5th gen...there would be no more external resistor box...do these come with the 4th gen engines?

This is the only way to tell what year engine you are getting.

The JDMs have an internal coil distributor and the P/S bracket is different between 92-96 and 97+.

I appreciate all your help, and I just spoke to the owner of the company and he confirmed that the engines are from 92-96 Preludes. So now I know. Thank you all for your help.

Later.
