crunchy 5 speed SH solution

Well boys last week my 5 speed got really crunchy all of a sudden it would not go into gears on down shifts for exit ramps or for passing. Up shifts would have to be done very slowly or else they would grind the shift lever would hang up and not engage the gear. So my Honda tech friend looked at it in his garage, he said that the slave and master were leaking. Ok so we pop those in no change to the car at all I panic this means bad stuff so we plan on a clutch swap and the whole thing gives me a stomach ache.

Well he says lets do a ATTS fluid change first that can help... the system only holds like a quart or some small amount like that. He does the swap and on a short drive around the block it now shifts better. I guess when it is a little low it puts a load on the tranny in some sort of way making for really notchy and bad shifting

I cannot belive the difference that it made!!!

Lesson!!! change your ATTS fluid for better shifting, it has helped mine !!!!

Thanks for the tip man. The last time I had my ATTS fluid changed was my 60k service and I have 92k on my car now...

How many miles were on your 'lude when you made the change?

I dont see how changing ATTS fluid will effect shifting; it has nothing to do with it. Maybe you just got lucky...

I dont even think the dealer follows the helms. Just replace the ATTS fluid like you do the tranny. 31mph test... psssh, who does that anyway??

Well my thoughts are that if the ATTS oil is off it can effect the drivetrain by causeing a load shift of some sort back to the tranny. That is what it does doesn' it, meter out power to the proper places ...I mean the systems ARE connected to each other and with only a quart of fluid to boot

Fact is my car now shifts better and the crap that came out was gross, orange and burnt looking rather then red, not something I want in my car ( 130k )

The whole thing was his idea to try ( what would he know he is just a Honda tech ) he has paper work / check list that give a detailed procedure for the change and a ton of stuff to check and a huge list of things that the ATTS can cause ( notchy shifting is one of them ) but your right just lucky

You don't to buy into the idea fine I'm not selling it run the old fluid...I plan on changing mine in a month from now and every six from here on out. Besides it cost me a case of Bass beer....

Yes its best to use Honda ATF in the ATTS.
I really doubt that the atts has anything to do with the tranny but if you think so...

The system hold more than a quart but its like a automatic tranny in the idea that even if you drain and refill all of the oil wont be changed out. If yours was that bad I suggest draining/refill/ drain/refill untill clean fluid is present. And change the fluid more often than you have been/ should have been doing.

I know some people don't do the fluid level check because its a PITA but I do it and most of the time I overfill or underfill my atts. I can't tell unless I do the check.
