ah just this weekend at a lapping event....
i thought it'd never happen to me, always check my valve lash before an event.
My Crower stage2 snapped this weekend after a 2 and a half years of use. I hope my valve train is not damaged. I'm not sure if Crower will cover any of this but i'll give them a call tomorrow.
Just letting you guys know...
I'm not deining i don't drive the car hard, i take the car to AutoX's and lapping events, but tha'ts what the cams are meant for. Just giving you guys some warning before hand before you purchase these guys.
I'll post pic's later tonight if i can.
Hope the rest of you guys more luck than me.
So my guess was right, huh? Sorry to hear it. I thought it was odd that you got 0 compression on cylinders 3 and 4. Did both cams snap, or just one? How did the valves get stuck open? Now that I think about it, the lobe centers on cylinder 3 and 4 are only around 90 degrees apart, right? Perhaps the cams happen to stop at the right point to keep the valves on 3 and 4 open, so that's why the compression test was 0. I would have expected them to spin around to where the valves were closed, but who knows what's happening at those RPMs.
Did you inspect the valve rockers and valve stem tips? How did those look? How did the cam caps look? If the metal didn't fragment too badly, you might not have done any damage. You can remove the cams and do a leakdown test to see if any of the valves are leaking (i.e. bent).
Let's see some pictures. I'm dying to see what the rockers and VTEC lobes look like! I want to see if that Ferrea stuff I bought is worth it to eliminate the friction between the cam and rockers.
the cam snapped on the exhaust cam, right on cylinder 1. So when i crank, the intake cam is moving and exhaust cam on cylinder one is moving only.
I guess i could put the stock cam back in and drive around for now
sh1ty deal
Inspect everything carefully before you go starting the engine. You wouldn't happen to know anyone with a bore scope would you? That way you could look at the pistons and cylinder walls without pulling the head.
So if the engine is good to go, you going to order a set of those 15x8s with me?
If you guys want to know the situation of how it happened
basically this happened at a lapping day
7100rpm BRRRRRRR......then POOF!!!! and total shut down, the car wouldn't start anymore.
no bang or anything like that or loud sounds, just a POOF!!! just like what you hear in a magic act and everything just shut down.
i'm not sure what caused this...i'm just saying that i check my valve lash regularly. So i don't think that's the culprit....it really could be the way they are made, quality issue = part malfuction. At this point i'm not sure.
Even if lash was an issue the cams should not snap.
I would definitely send pics to Crower and expect a new set of cams back. There is no way this can be any but their fault unless you had an oiling issue, and even then, this is not an acceptable failure mode. I've seen cams sieze but never a (stock) cam snap.
I just talked to Brian Crower, i think they are going to replace it. He just told me the send it back. I just hope there isn't any other damage to the valve train. I'll do a leak down test later today to be sure.
I was just giving you the headsup on what could happen, not saying their products are bad or anything. Just letting you guys be aware.
See, I don't think its a "nice gesture" by crower. In my mind, they'd BETTER replace it, as well as paying for any damage caused by the failure. That failure is completely unacceptable.
