Crower cams dyno runs comming to a screen near you!

Well i did a search and maybe i missed it but i still have yet to see a crower cams dyno run. Anyway i ordered my cams a week ago and i am still waiting for them to roll in. Hopefully NRG racing told me crower might have them available the 24th. Anyway when i put them in i am going to go to the dyno to see what kind of numbers they put out. Also here is some back ground on the motor.

I have a this in my 95 accord lx coupe. 1998 usdm motor from wrecked prelude. Some of you may have seen this motor. It came from Honda/Acura salvage in san diego. It cam from a white 5gen lude with the back end cut off, i got it may 2001. Miles on odometer was 3,649, so it must of sat there a while. Anyway my mods are simple but effective:

Generic cold air intake with home depot insulation around the pipe wrapped with heat shielding. (similar to header wrap)

Coolant bypass ( keep in mind vegas gets damn hot, the high today was 106)

stock header

removed cat

accord greddy sp exhaust

timing retard 4degrees.

VAFC

Butterfly flapper valve not hooked up.

Power steering belt removed.

mobile one oil 5w30 synthetic

Also had to convert the obd2-obd1
-----------------------------------------------------
jdm 95 distributer external coil

jdm ecu

jdm 95 fuel injectors, to work with accord resistor pack. ( saturated or peak and hold i always forget)

Anyway all this was tuned on a dyno The biggest gain was timing, a lot of people advance thiers but i tried that and lost power, so i went the other way and gained 6 hp up top, figure that?

So i gave a detailed list of my mods so maybe others could obtain the same i did on the dyno. I made a respectable 176.2 hp after all was said and done. Now with the crower stage 2 cams with the stock idle lobs, i doubt i will get the claimed 15-18, i just don't see my motor pushinng over 190 to the wheels with out higher comp pistons or headwork, but who knows.

So i look forward to posting the new dyno runs once i get these cams in. Who knows if it takes any longer i might have my type-s pistons in too.

sorry for the book.

later

if you had a jdm motor you would gain more from those cams. 10:1 on the usdm h22s isnt really that friendly for big, or in your case, mild cams.

Excellent point! I thought that also, the compression may have trouble turning the cams to their true potential. I am dropping in the S pistons as soon as i can.
Thanks!

I also whated to buy a pair from him, but he said he couldn't be for sure how fast he could get them. The prices are nice but I don't want to wait 2 weeks to get them. Adam was supposed to call me today to see when he would get them and nothing.

well my cams will be here tomorrow on the 27th and they are going to go in the same day. I will take pics of the install for all to see. I am going to put around 500 miles on them to break them in before i do a couple of passes. Anyway i got the last stage 2 cams from crower. Brian from crower said that the cams won't be back in stock for about two months. Since they were so in short supply my only option for stage 2 was the ones with out the stock idle lobes (63422). So i hope my valvetrain holds up untill i get the springs and retainers. I will be going to the dyno on or around july 15th with some friends. We are going to tune in my cams and tune in my firends 2000 civic cx hatch/h22 and my other friends 89 crx hf/b16 ( type r everything). Should be a fun day. The h22-hatch and i are going to see who puts down more power. JDM h22 vs. my 98USDM camed' up h22. Lots of pics to come!

Your timing issues are likely due to the ****ty local gas- Honda claims 91 octane minimum, but I don't think it's happy unless it's running on 93, 94, or 95. NOS octane boost always did wonders in mine even on 93.

I'd also suggest hooking the secondary runner butterfly up again. It won't affect things on the top end and should improve the bottom end dramatically.

Yeah, I ordered the 63422 also. Should be putting them in on Monday but I don't know how soon I will be able to dyno them. I bought some AEM cam gears but how easilt is it to adjust these while the car is on the dyno?

You know what, i had recently put in some octance booster to my already 93 octane gas and i can't believe how much better my car runs now. It's a sh!tload smoother giving it heavy throttle from low rpms all the way up to the redline. It even seems that it pulls harder up top too, but the up top part could just be all in my head. I hoping that it isn't. Going to find out after i race my brother again in his S/Ced 318ti.

hmm ..maybe i should get some octane booster as well ..hmm..
those cams are seeming to be the best choice since some people are already putting down the h22a skunk2 cams.. and yes they have them.. select few.

accordh22a5 : whats the coolant bypass?
gills : you ever go down to DPA ?

chameleon: do a search on coolant bypass.

everyone: beware, repeated use of octane booster will foul your plugs, O2 sensors, and ruin your cat. I'd suggest no more than once per oil change (no more frequent than that).

Well i got my cams from ups on thursday. The cams look ok and they will be dropped in on monday. I will make sure to take pics for you guys. Anyway i called up brian at crower and asked him about will springs/retainers be needed and how to break them in. This is what he said:

The stage 2 (63422) and the stage 2 stock idle lobes (63422A) will be fine with the stock valvetrain. The only reson why they recommend the spring/retainer for the 63422 is that most people that race will use those and more than likley raise the rev limit. ANd for the 63422A they only reccomend it. He said i will be absolutley fine. Well only time will tell.

As for the break in, he said the cams require no break in. "Just drop them in and go" Well i am going to at least put a couple of miles in them to get the oil to coat them. I will let everyone know how they feel on friday.

One last thing i am having a fuel pressure regulator put in. What should the stock pressure be set at. Thanks!

I thought you had to hold the rpms at 3k for a bit? But yeah, Im curious to as what kinda gains you'll get...

well i just got my cams in and it is getting late so i will make it short and go into detail later on this week.

Bad News
First off the whole timing belt removal/install sucked. That damn hydrolic tensioner was $78, i have more stuff to say about that piece but i will elaborate later. I am also throwing and code 12 (EGR), have no idea why, i will troubleshoot that tommorow.

Good news
Car pulls really nice at 6 and power continues to redline. Car wants to rev more.( will get that done down the road) Bottom end lost a bit but picks up nice in midrange. I will be heading to the dyno around JUL 15 so i can tune fuel, cam timing, and ignition timing.

also i took pics of the install and the stock cams next to the stage 2's.

later i am going to bed.

wish me luck!

Ok first i have the pics up from the install (check my sig), they are at the end of the album. I took two pics of the cams side by side but they didn't come out that great. Anyway here are my thoughts on the whole cam install.

First off the whole timing belt thing licked balls. The hydrolic-tensioner was a *****. I picked up one from honda and that cost me 78 bucks. I found out later i could have reused my old one. All you have to do is remove the bolt on the bottom of it and stick a screwdriver in the bolt hole and you can turn a screw to bring the rod down. The timing belt was a ***** to line up with everything, but eventually we got everything to jam out.

Once we got the cams in we took the car out in front of the shop and warmed it up and took it for a ride up and down the street. I prolly put 2 miles on it before i did a hot pass for everyone. Before 4grand the car is a turd, then comes 4grand nice jump in power, now here comes vtec at 5grand, noticably louder and higher pitched, then comes 6grand, ok now i can really feel what the stage 2 is all about, from 6grand to redline the car pulls like a mutha' and hard. I was banging off the funlimiter before i knew it. The power does not drop off and you can tell the car will pull higher once i get the spring/retainer kit on to raise the revlimit.

One big thing is i need to go dyno tune the car again. I need to dial in the cam gears, ignition timing, and my fuel. I am going to adjust my valves again on friday to make sure everything is cool. The track is open on friday too, so i might make a couple of passes for fun.

One last thing, i fixed my code 12 (egr) i forgot to hook the vacuum line back up. Also with these cams my motor deffinatley has a differant personality. Will take some getting used to, also my gas milage looks like it will go to ****. On my VAFC the manifold pressure has increased a lot from where it used to be just driving around, which means these cams are sucking alot more air.

Feel free to look at the pics and ask me any questions.

later
