Coilovers - Helper Springs?

I've noticed a couple coilover suspension that have these helper springs along with a regular linear spring (Tanabe Sustec Pro S-S and Tein HAs). From tanabe's website, they state

Quote:
Helper springs assist with rebound stability, ride comfort and keep the main coil spring seated. Preload of the main spring can also be set to zero, for maximum comfort and suspension travel. Non helper spring models are also available for a lower cost!
So from my understanding its used for more for comfort and it somehow integrates itself into providing a better rebound or something. Correct me if I am missing something.

Then I look at the TeinSS and they do not have the helper spring. Then I looked at the HAs and they do have them. As quoted from Tein

Quote:
Helper springs are available to stop spring rattle.
I did search and everyone does say that the Tein HAs with the helper springs are less noisy.

My question is does it do anything besides getting rid of noise? I guess I just don't know how it functions in relation to the main coil. Thanks!

I couldnt answer about noise or affect but I do know that if you dont ahve them in with the HA's the springs wouldnt seat properly when not under load. Basically they take up the slack which is very nice when jacking the car up for repairs.

There's 2 different kinds - helper springs, and secondary springs.

A helper springs purpose is to keep the "real" spring seated properly which reduces noise. Sounds like that's what the both the Tanabe and Tein HA uses. I would guess the Tein SS doesn't need helper springs because the spring rates aren't as extreme as the HA, and the main spring is long enough to not need them.

Secondary springs are stronger and contribute to the ride characteristics of the suspension - in essence, they'll use two different linear spring rates which act together to create a progressive setup. Those setups aren't terribly common, though. If a company wants a progressive acting coil-over, it just makes more sense to wind a single progressive spring. Although a 2-spring setup has the advantage of being user-tunable by swapping around either of the springs.

Oh ok. So besides noise and sitting properly, are there any other advanatges to having the helper springs?
