Cleaning oil from floor mats?

Yay me for buying a leaking bottle of oil. I thought the bottle was OK when I picked it off the shelf. It was full and such but with a little oil on the bottom. Same with the second bottle I picked up. I thought it was a different bottle that had leaked. I left it on the floor of the rear seats since I had some other errands to do today.

Great. A small amount of oil has leaked onto my rear floor mat and the carpet. Second bottle did not leak.

What do you guys recommend to clean the spill? Steam cleaning or other? Or get my whole interior professionally detailed while I am at it?

Well what worked for me when I spilled used motor oil in my car was some Castrol Super Cleaner. I just scrubbed at it with a brush and it came out.

Castrol Super Cleaner? Is that commercially available at AutoZone? And is that specifically used for getting out oil?

Castrol Super Clean, available at any auto parts store. Purple spray bottle. Be careful, though, as it will oxidize aluminum on contact and probably bleach weaker dyes.

I'd recommend Zout or Greased Lightning first, great fabric/stain cleaners, work great on organic and inorganic stains for clothes. I'd try Super Clean as a last resort (nasty, harsh stuff).

I just picked up Greased Lightning Blast. I will be cleaning the spill area this weekend (even though I really should do it now)

^ Well when I bought mine along time ago it came in a white bottle and it didn't have citrus in it. Should be the same thing though.

Believe it or not, brake cleaner works really well Just test it first to see if your mats can take it but it'll take oil and grease right out Get the non-chlorinated tho :P

Yeah, my g/f and her friends were stepping on 3 quarts of motor oil one night and I realized it three days later. Bad news.

Grease lighting though took it out real quick. My carpet went from looking like a shop floor to well, stock carpet again.

where i work we use a chemical called Blue Max. amazing degreaser and soft on fabrics. i would use this stuff on the carpets. you could also try diluting some Simple Green or the purple stuff from castrol. full strength of those might bleach the carpets (and be careful with aluminum, as stated earlier)

might wanna spray some cologne or somethin in there to get rid of the oil and degreaser stink

whoever suggested using nonchlorinated brake cleaner on the carpets... are you nuts? sure it'll get the oil out, but you've rid yourself of one problem and created another! that stuff is toxic to breathe. you'd never be able to drive with brake cleaner-soaked carpets.
