Cheap guy + resourcefulness = cheap solutions to annoying problems

Those who know me know some of the odd things I've done on my car using various things from the hardware store or whatever... my rear deck brake light hole cover, my clear/silver turn signal housings, my redesigned indiglo control housing, etc... that are also made to not look out of place or homemade...

I wanted to buy the little black ring thing that closes off the top of the shift boot that comes with the older Tegs, S2000, etc.. so that I can fit my JDM titanium knob without the chrome piece clanging on the shift rod all the time. I've seen some guys who just took off the chrome piece and wrapped the boot onto the shift rod... it works, but doesn't enclose the boot as well as the ring.

I went to Honda to buy the part off the S2K. I even showed the guy the piece on the S2K they had in the showroom. Paid $8 for it. When it finally came (I ordered it in Jan) it turns out he ordered me the plastic strap that goes underneath the boot... $8 for something I can get for 20 cents at a hardware store. I was peesed off majorly... he then says I have to order the whole boot for the piece I want.

Too cheap to buy the whole boot for a little piece of plastic, I had an idea. The result of which is the new shift boot encloser I have on my car now. I modified a perfectly sized rubber cane tip (carefully carved to shape and sanded down) and strapped it on from below the console. It works! To me it looks just as good as the Honda ring and it only cost me $3 and an hours time.

I just wanted to share that... cheap solutions for a cheap man! LOL!!!

i asked HandA-accessories before... if you want the ring of S2000 or the boot of S2000.. you have to buy the whole console for $1XX. so I just go for G2 Teg boot.

That's what I mean. I didn't want to buy the whole boot for that little ring so I made a ring myself. I was quoted $50 for the Teg boot and that's too much for me for a little piece of plastic.

The Honda ring also doesn't fit snug onto the shift rod, correct? Somehow, the cane tip was perfectly sized to the shift rod so it fits snug... no unwanted movement allowed and I can also push down the boot ring if I want more clearance for my hand while shifting.

It's all good. I just wanted to save some $.

i got mine a lot cheaper than that. you should have post this earlier so that i don't waste any money. hehe.. by the way. I wrapped the shaft with a strip of towel and rubber band, so the boot will stay at a certain position and it is height adjustable too.

Oh, and I was also thinking about picking one off a trashed Teg or CRX at the wreck yard... but I felt icky if I put what was basically a piece of trash below my $230 knob.
