Changing gear in tranny

What's involved in changing a gear? Say I want to change my 5th gear do I just change the gear on the mainshaft? or do I have to change the synchro also? also do I need to change the gear on the countershaft?

Also for a custom final drive what's involved in this? Changing the gear on the differential, do I need to get a new gear for the countershaft also? you can't remove the final drive gear on the countershaft right?

Also what tranny has compatible parts?

H22
H23
Any F tranny has gears we can use?

I think a custom drive would be a better method. I think it would help a lude a lot, because how many of us have ran up to 150? I ran to 137 for ****s and giggles, but 100-110 is enough for me. Is a h23 tranny compatable with an h22 block? Will it bolt straight on? I am going to do a swap soon, so I need to figure out what tranny to get (I know not SH so far).

I'm not talking if a tranny fits on the block I'm asking about if there's F-series tranny that the gear would fit in the H-series tranny. I have a H23 tranny opened in the garage at home so I want to do something cool with it before I put it in the car. Quaife LSD is already in the list Though since I have to save money for everything I want to do, that's a project that's gonna take a while to complete. Though I'm planning that next summer it should be ready to bolt in the car

how hard was the tranny to get apart gear wise? is a reverse fork something you think you could replace yourself?

4bidden, your problem isn't the reverse fork... you've likely lost all your forks.

The gears need to be replaced in sets and I believe it will also impact the synchros- I've heard of people "mixing and matching" 4th and 5th gearsets but I haven't seen it done. It's something I'll be looking into shortly.... anyone have a used tranny they want to sell?

4bidden: I've just opened the tranny housing, I don't think the reverse fork should be too much problem removing, it's only 2 more bolts I think, I'm gonna play more with it this weekened probably

marcucci: that's what I wanted to know thanks Do you know if the gear from F-series tranny would fit in our tranny? Also is there a way to figure out the gear ratios? Can I just count the teeth on the gear and divide them?
