Catalytic Converter

How many of you who have an aftermarket exhaust have removed there catlytic converter? Is there anyway around having the check engine light come on when it is removed? Did you notice any HP or TQ gains? Also, are there any cons to doing this? Thanks in advance

I don't think removing the cat gives that much of a benefit unless you've got an engine built for racing that needs to get rid of exhaust. Prelude cats are quite far down the exhaust so they aren't as restrictive (they don't stop hot air) and have hot air pushing cooler stuff through the cat. The converter can become a problem in a high boost turbo car if it narrows the exhaust, and if it's placed too early in the exhaust stream.

Oh, and your car will STINK without a cat. You may gain some high midrange and top end, but I doubt it's worth the stink, nevermind the sound, the cops or even your environmentally-friendly conscience :P

You will get performance gains from taking out the cat, if you do it properly you can buy a "test pipe" which has a O2 sensor plug-in that your factory O2 sensor can be plugged into...then you won't have a "Check Engine" Light come one...

the only downfall is that your car will be SO SO SO loud, and sound like a Tin Can...

Without major mods its not worth it.

Once you get a header, intake and exhaust you might want go with a Random technology cat. IMO its better to have a high flow cat than no cat at all, unless your running high compression or f/i.

But remember its is against Federal law to remove a properly functioning catalytic converter.

This has been a public service announcement.
