Car Problems...Possible Cat. Going Bad?

Hey guys, please diagnose these symptoms...I think my cat is going bad (103k on stock cat)

There has been a lot of rattling from the exhaust lately (at first I thought it was the cat-back, but I checked all the bolts and heatshields, nothing is making contact. Then I thought it was the bracket from the DC header hitting the oil pan...it is not...thus leads me to the cat)

Now that it has been getting cold, I have been smelling that rotten egg smell under hard acceleration...

And under hard acceleration there is a lot of smoke from the exhaust...I know some is normal for the H22...but I believe that this is more than normal.

So if this is indeed the cat going bad where can I get a direct bolt on high flow replacement?? I dont want to deal with a universal where you have to weld on the flanges...I want a direct bolt on replacement that is high flow, has the stock o2 bung location, and will pass emissions...any suggestions?

sounds a lot like your cat is bad. to make sure, you could just jack your car up when its cold and beat on the cat with your hand, and if you hear a bunch of rattling, it's definitely your cat.

the best bolt on replacement is the random tech, which comes with flanges and an o2 bung hole. there is no other high flow for our car with this (all car sound cats need to be welded). random claims it will pass emissions, but i have yet to personally experience passing it with the cat (who knew illinois had emissions, i didnt )

Cool, thanks for the help...and yea, the ChicagoLand area has emissions....we are becoming more and more like California everyday (Why oh why does IL have to be a blue state?)

Did you throw a P0420 code? If your cat isn't working and falls out of spec, the Secondary O2 sensor should pick it up, right?

What was your solution?
