Im looking into purchasing an alarm within a week and was just wondering what other peoples opinons were about different alarms? Right now im between Viper 500 w/ remote start ($400 installed) or a comparably priced Clifford ($?$?) I really like all the options the Clifford alarms provide but OUCH I was quoted $645 installed for the Solaris system which is the second best Clifford alarm... it comes with everything imaginable most of which I will probably never use. So what is everyone else using to protect their babies??? Gimmie some feedback.
One question though, since the 5th gen ludes come with a special key that sends a signal to the ignition to allow it to start... can 5th gen ludes even have remote starts?

theres been a lot of discussion about pager alarms on this board..u might try to search for it..i believe it was a debate between the Aladdin 2000 and the Compustar 2000AS. both are good systems, and im planning on buying either one of the two..the way i think of it is: if i get alerted thru a pager that my alarms going off then im runnin out there to see wtf is going on..but with just a normal alarm its not always guaranteed u will hear it going off. the pager alarms are tight man..little LCD screen with a bunch of goodies pretty cheap too..i think i was quoted between 200-250 by a friend of mine for the aladdin. anyhow, alarms are alarms..*pager alarms tell u ur sh*ts going off during a movie..normal alarms..u cant hear sh*t and people outside won't care either. my opinion..but if u were stuck between clifford and dei..i think i'd go for clifford..cuz clifford bought dei out *
Isn't it the other way around? Dei bought out Clifford.
Oh, and about the remote start: I was told the only way to have it on our 5th gens is if you disable the factory immobilizer. Apparently, what some have done is to slice off a huge chunk off the key and permanently hard wire it to the car. That way the computer "reads" the chip of the key always and so this allows for a remote start.
Would I recommend this? NOT a freakin' chance... The factory immobilizer is a great system. Leave it alone. Start your car the old fashioned way... the ignition.
The 2WAS and 2000AS are very similar, with the exception of a few features here and there. The 2WAS came out in either 98 or 99 and the 2000AS in 2000. Anyway, the major difference of the two is the 2000AS has a color LED screen with indiglo backlight and the 2WAS has a plain looking screen.
Now, about install price, I can't give you an accurate price since I got hooked up with mine. I payed $450 for the 2000AS installed. (My buddy is the manager/head tech rep of the shop where Compustar was born.) I think it would have cost about $600 plus $50 for the manual start solenoid installed. The 2WAS would run cheaper cause 1)The 2000AS replaced it 2)it has a few less features 3) it has a colorless remote.
About ludes and remote starting: What I had to do was, give up one of my keys and they somehow rigged the immobilizer into the rimote starting system. Does this cancel out the immobilizing feature if someone was to try and jack my lude? I'm not sure, but I can find out and let you all know. What I do know is that if someone really wanted a car that bad, they would take it. But at least with the compustar, you have a chance of catching them in the act so you could beat that a$$. Damn, listen to me, I sound like an ad for compustar.
Anyone have any opions regarding alpine or viper alarms. Im not really interested in the pager systems because I just forsee to many false alarms going off to the point where I will not even bother checking my car when the pager goes off.

I'm w/ you on this one. I'm in NYC and false alarms is something I live with and get used to. That's why I have a Clifford instead...
Mine is great, very happy w/it. 2 reasons why I chose it over Viper:
1. Quality is better
2. Sound of siren - the siren from the Viper is too common, at least around here. I believe they use the same siren as Python, Code Alarm, and a couple of other "lesser quality" systems.
The Clifford is much more distinct, I hear it much less often.
In other words, if u hear this siren sound go off, chances are it's ur shiet......
As for Alpine, very good reputation, but quite expensive and not readily available. Hope that helps.
as far as sirens... have the installer wire your horn in so it goes off with your siren... you get a little different sound that way...
as far as viper... i haven't checked on viper alarms lately, but when i did they talked... to me this attacts to much attention... but then again your car may have rims and stickers on it (no accussing, i don't know if it does) which would get the same effect...
the main thing with alarms is the professional installation... most of the sensors and components are made by the same companies....

immobilizer bypass (ie: transponder bypass) units have evolved. the one that was used in my car, in conjunction with the compustar unit, was one that ONLY bypasses the immobilizer during remote start for a split second. after the car is started, it swaps back to the factory immobilizer. so in a sense, u dont really lose the factory system. also, you dont have to cut open the key anymore.. you just have to wrap a sensor around the valet key and then the bypass box gets hidden somewhere inconspicuous... errr i cant even find the box myself!
