Bad wheel bearing - safe to drive on?

So I found out today the loud roaring coming from the rear wasn't the result of my bald snow tires & misalignment - I've a bad wheel bearing.

I was planning on doing some traveling this weekend - about 1,000 miles round trip. It's been at least 2 or 3 thousand miles already on it. I know it's tough to hazard a guess on something like this, but should I cancel my plans?

I guess I'm just looking for anything you might know from personal experiences (i.e. "my wheel fell off going 60 mph & I killed a nun and a pregnant lady").

Any advice, comments, questions, etc. are appreciated. Thanks . . . .

I wouldn't drive on a bad wheel bearing. It could sieze and ruin the spindle.

I have a set of rear hubs (the hubs and bearings are an integral unit), brand new in the box, never installed.

If you're needing just one, I will make you a very good price on both. Contact me via e-mail.

Luckily, you're replacing the rear hub, and that's TONS easier than replacing the front bearings.

I might even have another rear axle nut or two! I am not sure if I do, though.

I definitely wouldnt drive on it. Ive driven a car that would eat wheel bearings alive due to bad motor and transmission mounts. Initially I didnt realize the bad mounts were causing the bearings to rumble, so I had to drive it that way until someone told me it could (I replaced the mounts, and the bearings, and it stopped). Anyway, you can do it, but its dangerous. The wheel bearing on this car almost failed on me. It was a front bearing (on this car, the front bearing and hub was one unit), and I started hearing clicking noises in low speed turns. I took the street way home, and lifted the side with the bad bearing. I pulled on the top and bottom of the wheel, and it moved about a half inch in whatever direction I wanted. I think it would have fallen off if I took the highway, because really the only thing stopping it was the axle nut. A short trip might be fine, because I drove the car like this, and had to replace bearings periodically until I ultimately fixed it, but you are talking about a 1000 mile stint in a very short time period. Id rent\borrow a car, then come back and fix it. (Unless you can get the parts before then)

Thanks for the input - I guess I'll look into renting a vehicle for the weekend.

I am also quite glad it's not a front bearing. None of that ball-joint & hydraulic-press nonsense.

I really hope there's nothing wrong with the spindle. Thinking about it more, it's been more than 3,000 miles on it already. Guess I'll find out soon enough . . . .

I'll e-mail you shortly re: those parts, Billy - thanks.
