Another LW crank pulley failure

Just wanted to pile on the evidence here. It always annoys me when users ignore the damage that LW crank pullies do "because mine is just fine".

- An oil pump gear failure likely has nothing to do with this. If you notice, the fractures begin at the edges of the gear where the crank galls the gear with age. I have seen this galling a lot and I suspect it is the source of damaged oil pump gears.

- I have seen several applications now of a LW pulley without a problem. A least one track vehicle with several seasons of usage, and one street car with high miles with them have had no trouble with oil pump gears or bearing failures.

Two key things here:
- oil pump gears should be changed frequently when used for sustained periods at high RPMs

- accessory belts should NEVER be overtightened

- oil pressure MUST be maintained

I'm convinced that these three things contribute to the failures that are typically contributed to LW pullies.

I know this is old, but we might also consider the difference between under-driven lightened pulleys and stock diameter lightened pulleys as well.

Your running removed balance shafts and moded oil pump correct ? What is your oil pressure up top ?

balancing issues and dampers still come into play, the fluidampr on my accord has been good for 80k+ miles. The jdm honda racing crank pulley sold from some shops come with warrantees from my understanding as well. Other than those two with their obvious advantages I wouldnt trust anything else. Even with the issues you've listed Todd, just seems to be luck and there is no telling how well the pulley was installed in the first place either yanno?
