aerospeed makes an intake that almost looks like an intercooler. does anyone know if they make it for the 5th gen. prelude and is it worth getting? yeah i know the deal with AEM/Iceman Intakes, but what about this one?

sam,

seriously? dang... i still haven't gotten an intake for my ride. as of now, my car feels just not right, i have a tanabe racing medallion full catback system so maybe an intake will smooth out the problem, yeah?

sup DREW i think you might be talking about the FMIS (Front Mount Intercooler System IMO its kinda ghetto looking and from what i've heard doesn't perform as well as the AEM CAI and it also gets a lot of gunk, water and other crap on the faux IC. have you considered the AEM CAI or are you afraid of Hydrolock?

of all the CAI's AEM is prolly the best mainly because the others aren't constructed as well lemme go over stuff that i've heard and experienced.

AEM-1PC mount is welded on pretty sturdy looking, you do have to cut the resonator opening with a dremel for the CAI to fit through it.

INJEN-2PC had this for my 99 civic si if the mounts for the lude were any thing like the si's it sucks (mine broke on me!) other than that i think its a 3" intake wheras the AEM is less (2.75?) has a CAI extension so you can go w/ a short ram.

ICEMAN-2PC? only what i've heard, made of plastic (might crack due to high heat?)
CAI extension is tapered so that it fits in the resonator hole with no modifications.

another thing i noticed about my AEM and my old INJEN. during hard acceleration the AEM sounds smooth but the INJEN "warbled" kinda hard to desribe it really. oh and if anyone has anything to add to my above post please do.

blueshadow,

does the AEM CAI give any kind of noise? such as a deep throaty sound to it?

not one thats really noticeable you can hear it hissing and sucking air when you get on it but thats normal, the change come when you VTEC it thats the most noticable sound IMO. it just sounds so badas$! the car just sounds mean. it even drowns out my G-power.
example from 1K rpm to 5.5K i hear the G-power but when it VTEC's all i hear is the AEM. sorry you just have to hear it in person. i don't have any sound clips though but maybe you can do a search.

Regarding those AEM CAI, i have one myself. Now the sounds that you mention on hissing, yeah that's true. And when you say the car sound mean, it's not actually from the AEM CAI. Well remember that when you install the AEM CAI, you have to remove the stock resonator. Since the car has no more resonator, that's why you're hearing the mean sound coming in from the AEM CAI. But note that, you'll lose out on the low end torque, but gain on high-end.

I am have an aem cai... and it is well worth the money in my opinion. It did not cause me to lose any low-end really at all... but I had pulleys already, so.

Also just an opinion here too, but I really do not like how it could mis-represent your car as being f/i.

If an Iceman is going to crack it's not going to be from heat people. It'll be from extreme cold and a hard knock to it.

In the event of high heat contact it'll MELT not crack but honestly neither is a problem (IMHO).

uh yeah that too uhh i guess my bad that was what i meant to say either way i have at least on confirmed post from a guy with a civic si/ICEMAN and he said it cracked. i'm almost certain it was due to real cold. or it might have been real old i can't remember for sure, but it has happened so...

heres some pics of my AEM CAI. the second pic shows my superb cutting skilz at first i though that i could get away with peeling the opening upwards and hammering it out of the way. but it didn't look good i mainly did it cause i was impatient to hear the AEM. but by peeling it back i wasn't able to bolt the mount down.
oh and on the second pic if you see what i did, i took an old step hose, cut it and mounted it above the filter so that there is no metal to metal contact. clever huh?

under the hood intakes don't gain as much hp but are louder in vtec...they sound better than the aem but don't put the ponnies to the ground.

and about the that long rubber hose/control module that went from the intake manifold to the resonator actuator thingy (i can't remember the technical term someone help me out here)
here is what i did to fix that remove the whole assy, took a section of the rubber hose and did this. if you dont do this or find someway to plug up the two vacuum holes your idles goes up and down and up and down..

Good call on putting that barrier so there's no metal to metal contact. I knew someone who didn't do that and the coarse hole he cut actually bored through the piping. When he took it off, there was a vertical cut on the backside. Seems like you cut the hole pretty wide, his was thinner, but wasn't exactly snug leaving room for piping to scrape back and forth.

BlueShadow: I don't think the piping on the Iceman would crack or melt. After some hard driving, I opened up my hood to let the engine cool cuz I wanted to change the oil and felt the piping and it was very cool to the touch. But like Joon said, it'll melt before it cracks. And unless a fire starts under there, I seriously doubt it'll melt. Only reason why I could go with AEM is if I was shy about cutting my sheetmetal or if I liked the way the piping looked. But both intakes are good, so I would recommend both.

ps: The Iceman comes with a little guard that you put around the sheetmetal to protect the piping and make the fit more snug.
