Guys, I'm no pro in Audio, but manage to install a Sony MDX-C6500X MiniDisc Head Unit. Now, do I bypass the AFBS or what? I heard ppl saying that it'll either screw up the speakers or HU if I didn't do the bypass. Is anyone here a pro at this stuff? Help me out..
If ur just changing the HU and not the speakers (specifically the rear speakers), just leave everything as is and just install your HU as you would any other car. SHould be a simple 30 minute job The AFBS won't get affected...
Excellent. By the way, regarding my last post, adding to the Stock CD HU, an additional MD Unit which I just bought, is possible. It can be done with 2 relays (1 Front - 1 Rear). But after listening to the MD HU, I just strictly replace the Stock HU and didn't bother doing the relay thing. All I can say is, Stock HU SUCKS.. Now, time for me to shop for another Sony Changer..

Uhh...i dont know if i agree with that. Mind if i ask if you've done some audio work? the only reason i ask is that i tried to install my own HU (the aiwa mp3 player) and could not for the life of me get the damn rear speakers to work. I knew the connections were right...everythign was right...but no sound out of the rear speakers. I even replaced the damn stockers with some eclipses...btu still no sound (front still sounded ok, but no rear). I finally took it to best buy, where the guy just bypassed the
AFBS, and that was the only way to get it to work.

are you sure about that??? cuz i had a Sony HU in there for a year before adding new rear speakers. when i got the rear speakers though, i just plugged them in still utilizing AFBS--hence giving me more bass. i just recently bypassed it (or should i say, Joon did the bypassing ) and it gives me a much clearer sound, but at the expense of less bass.

If you're doing the head unit alone don't bypass the AFBS. ONLY bypass it if you have aftermarket speakers.
In regards to iranman's case I don't know what the hell's going on there, but that's the first case I've ever heard of that happening.
jbx if you want a write up on how to do the bypass let me know. I was going to do it a while ago but I didn't think it was was in high demand so I didn't do it. I have all the pictures and everything ready.

As for what happened to your's...what you described doesn't sound right...and i agree joon that that's the first time i've ever heard of it....
well, ****, thats nice to know that im the isolated case ....
Oh well, i upgraded my speakers anyways...so that doesn't pose any problems. But when i took the car to best buy to fix it, they claimed that they were never able to get a Gen5 Lude stereo to work correctly upon changing only the head unit. Dunno...

thats some funny stuff hahahah. well i work at the installations for circuit city and its pretty funny to hear about the problems. all you have to do to install the head unit is buy a harness and a fit kit and follow the colored wires and everything will work. as for the rear afs if u replace the deck its fine leave it alone. what it is is that the rear stock speakers are 2 ohms because if you look in the trunk near the lever to pull down the seats there is a black box. that is like a little amp for the rears. so when you replace with 4ohm speakers which are standard for aftermarket ones you need to bypass it. as for me i would just run wire to the front behind the head unit to bypass it instead of looking at the harness at the amp to see what it is

i work at best buy, yet i agree that most are morons. I talked to one of our car audio guys and he told me about our installer. He did like all of the clippers' installs and even found a work around for putting a sub in a porsche via air conditioning vents. I talked to the installer today and he is very cool and will make me a custom box for my subs in a few weeks.

at the end of this week. (when the next truck comes in) i can't wait I want the black chrome face plate.
How easy is the install? Details of installation? Anything i should watch out for? I heard it is simple and i've also heard it's not.

Install kit as in wiring harness? Nope...all you need is that and those wire crimper things or a soldering iron. I've never run into any problems myself on installing HU's...so you should be fine. Most errors occur by installer error....it should be pretty easy tho.
Those new clarions look decent....a lot better than the old ones. But still a little too busy for my taste's tho....
I have a friend that works at bestbuy also....in bestbuy's inventory, car audio has one of the highest % markups....so it's pretty cheap when you get the employee discount....should be pretty cool....

It seems like every week we have a question on installs for headunits. And although it's super easy, I figure we can avoid alot of confusion if you or I wrote it all up. Let me know what you think. Cuz it's boring as sh|t right now.
i picked up the wiring harness for 3.26 - original price 15.xx and grabbed some free crimps in the install bay (no soldering for me )
I already pulled my dash frame thing and am actually ready to start crimping. Problem is my head unit won't be in til either tommorow or sunday. Just a little eager
I remember reading about the pocket fabrication thing. Does anyone still have pics of how people taped or kept the pocket underneath with the new HU?
I just got done with testing out joon's method of getting rid of the rear deck rattle. Worked really well

By the way, i saw you in the harbor plaza place (taiko japanese restaurant place) on jeffrey. This was a while back....you were sitting in ur car with some girl listening/playing with the HU/radio. Your car was parked against the curb. I was pretty sure it was you heh.
